Palembang is the capital of South Sumatra and is commonly know as Pempek City. Pempek is Palembang's traditional seafood dish and although it can be made from any fish (ikan) the best is considered that which is made from Belida. Palembang spelling is Belido.

The Great Mosque is absolutely beautiful and was built in 1740. It was renovated by the Government when Megawati was in power as her husband came from Palembang.

Ampera bridge over the Musi River was a gift from the Japanese to the people of Palembang as an appology for attacking them during WW2.
