Palmetto is a city in Manatee County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,571 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, its population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 13,132.[1]

Palmetto is located at 27°31′20″N, 82°34′42″W (27.522115, -82.578418).[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.5 km² (4.4 mi²). 11.2 km² (4.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (2.92%) is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 12,571 people, 4,448 households, and 3,046 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,123.5/km² (2,912.9/mi²). There were 5,776 housing units at an average density of 516.2/km² (1,338.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 75.20% White, 12.78% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 8.78% from other races, and 2.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 26.71% of the population.

There were 4,448 households out of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 100.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,093, and the median income for a family was $40,132. Males had a median income of $26,526 versus $21,290 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,724. About 9.5% of families and 13.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.2% of those under age 18 and 6.0% of those age 65 or over.

The retail sale of alcoholic beverages is unlawful the whole of Sunday (Code 1975, § 4-1; Ord. No. 359, § 1, 3-6-89; Ord. No. 460, § 1, 9-23-91), similar to the "blue laws" in a few other northern counties of Florida. It is said that this ordinance was originally established due to the uninhibited consummation of alcoholic beverages by city commissioners. This ordinance only applies to the city of Palmetto itself, and not to nearby areas in unincorporated Manatee county (or to the other cities in the county).
