Coordinates: 12°59′N 80°11′E / 12.98, 80.18 Pallavaram (Tamil: பல்லாவரம்) is a suburban town within the city of Chennai and a municipality in Kancheepuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located near Tambaram, a hub for suburban trains as well as trains bound south.

Pallavaram was originally called Pallavapuram and has been in existence since the times of the Pallava king Mahendravarman I who built magnificent temples here. A cave shrine excavated on the Pallavaram Hills is one of the oldest temples in Chennai and predates Mamallapuram. However, the British archaeologist, Robert Bruce Foote had discovered artifacts and stone implements belonging to the Old Stone and Iron Age here.

Its surrounding areas include Pammal, Anakaputhur, Pozhichalur, Nagalkeni etc. Pallavaram is also a roadways hub, as all buses coming to Chennai from the south have to pass through this place. It is dangerously crowded during peak hours.

Pallavaram in recent times has grown significantly and has become one of the favorite residential areas. With a 200-foot road being constructed, it becomes a strategic location with easy access to Old Mahabalipuram Road (New Chennai) and Grand South Trunk (GST) Road. The famous schools and colleges nearby add flavor to it.

There were 3 big lakes and a few ponds that served as drinking water resource is now encroached by various people migrated from various other areas. The Civic authorities are in coma stage.

With Pallavaram's near access to an airport, an IT corridor and a business city, it is becoming a vibrant city.With plans for extending the airport Pallavaram is poised to become a booming landscape.
