[edit] History

The club was founded originally as the result between the merger of two existing Roman sides in the lower divisions; San Saba and Gruppo Borgo Cavalleggeri, taking the name Virtus Aurelia. Only a short while after its foundation, the name was changed into the final and current Pallacanestro Virtus Roma.

Through the years, due to sponsorship deals, it has been also known as Banco Roma (1971-1988), Phonola Roma (1988-1989), Il Messaggero Roma (1989-1992), Burghy Roma (1993-1994), Teorematour Roma (1994-1995), Nuova Tirrena Roma (1995-1996), Telemarket Roma (1996-1997), Calze Pompea Roma (1996-1999), Adr Roma (1999-2001) and Würth Roma (2001-2002).[1]
