Palau dels Esports de Barcelona

The Palau dels Esports de Barcelona (English: Barcelona's Sports Palace) is a multipurpose Indoor arena located in Barcelona, Catalonia. It is placed in the Lleida street, in the mountain of Montjuïc.

It is able to host competitions of any sport practiced under ceiling. It had a seating capacity of 8,000 spectators, all seated. Today the arena can hold up to 3,500 people.

Inaugurated in 1955 for the Mediterranean Games, it was designed by the architect Josep Soteras.

It was the only Indoor arena of his characteristics that the city of Barcelona had until 1971, when the FC Barcelona inaugurated the Palau Blaugrana. But after the inauguration of the Palau Blaugrana, the Palau dels Esports continued being the only palace of public titularidad, reason why it continued welcoming the main events not only sport, but also social, cultural and also musical events that took place in Barcelona.

During the 1980's it was the home venue of the basketball team of RCD Espanyol, that during several seasons competed in the ACB.

It was remodeled in 1986 by architect Francesc Labastida for the games of group E in the world-wide Championship of 1986 in basketball.

At the beginning of the 1990's the arena began to diminish its activity. First by the disappearance of the basketball team of RCD Espanyol. And mainly, by the inauguration in 1990 of the new Palau Sant Jordi, that happened to welcome the main events of the city.

In 1992 it hostes the competitions of Rhythmic gymnastics and the preliminary phase of the volleyball of the 1992 Summer Olympics.

In the middle of 1990's it let welcome sport events to be centered in the theater musical comedies and.

Finally, in 2000 it was put under a remodeling definitively to adapt it to the organization of spectacles theatricals and musical comedies. It was even given a new name, Barcelona Teatre Musical - Palau dels Esports, that did not leave place to doubts on the new direction of the enclosure. It lost seatin capacity, locating itself in the 3,500 spectators, but it gained in comfort and acoustic quality, conviertiendo itself in one of the Indoor arenas of Barcelona where more theater representations and musical performances are programmed.
