Palace Shield
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Palace Shield is the major cricket league for Preston and surrounding districts in Lancashire, England.
It recently celebrated its centenary, and is continuing to expand in size and improve in quality. There are 5 divisions in the main Saturday competition, 2 Sunday leagues and a thriving junior competition.
Current Test stars such as Andrew Flintoff began their careers in the Palace Shield, though it remains a competition for amateurs only. Teams such as Vernon Carus, Fulwood & Broughton, and Longridge have dominated in recent years, but an influx of new clubs ensures that competition remains keen and standards of facilities and play continue to improve.
The best player currently playing in the Palace Shield is Mr David Fisher of Vernon Carus. This upstanding gentlemen is known on the circuit as THE FOSH, although no-one really knows why. Carrying his coffin around the Fylde and Preston, he is constantly asked for his autograph, yet on the advice of Mr Christian Ash, he refuses to give it; therefore Sotheby's estimate that an actual authograph of THE FOSH is worth in the region of £60,000. It is rumoured that he is likely to be elevated to The House of Peers in the near future and will take the title, The Lord Fosh of Squires. His robing attendant will be Mr Ian Dunn.
