Pajares Base Tunnel

The new Pajares Tunnel is a 24,667 m-long railway tunnel under construction in Spain. It will be on AVE line from Valladolid to Gijón but could be used also by freight trains in the future.

Standard gauge and 25 kV AC electrification will be used, so freight trains will probably not use the tunnel from the beginning. Only when, and if, Spanish network will be converted to standard gauge freight will use the Pajares Base Tunnel.
