[edit] Merger
I posted this at the scenarioball article first, and thought I'd better put it here too. Everyone, please feel free to comment - it'll leave a better sense of how the community feels on the issue.
On the issue of a merger between the articles paintball tank and Scenario paintball, I do not think it'd be a good idea. This is because of one reason - scenarioball is not the only type of paintball that uses tanks. Woodsball uses tanks as well. Merging the paintball tank article with Scenario paintball wouldn't reflect that. It'd appear that tanks, and for that matter, other mechs and vehicles, are only used in scenario paintball games, which is, of course, incorrect. That's my two cents. ~ Maximilli, 19:57, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] PUG
What is a PUG? The article doesn't explain it. --- Jagged
- No, it doesn't, and I have half a mind to delete it. I have no small amount of experience and have never heard of such a thing. ~ Maximilli, 16:12, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
PUG is short for Panzer Ultraleicht Gepack (super light tank). Basically you build a light framework around yourself that looks like a tank and you carry it.- Spinebuster
- From what I've googled PUG's are really rather popular, at least in some communities. I think they are both common enough and distinct enough to have their own section below light tanks. Indeed they are promenant enough online to be able to point to them and say 'that is a typical paintball tank'
- I have corrected the translation of PanzerUlraleichtGepack; while they are 'super light tanks' that is not what PUG translates as. I emailed the designer to confirm this was the case:
- You are correct. Gepack also is the military term for knapsack or backpack, so Panzer Ultraleicht Gepack could legitimately be translated as "Ultralight Backpack Armor." My idea in developing the PUG was to create a personal armor system for paintball that could act as a tactical substitute for light AFVs and ground-support aircraft; since, because of insurance and safety requirements, motorized vehicles could not be used off-road at scenario games I abandoned the engine entirely. Instead of creating a 4- or 6-person human-powered behemoth that would be impossible to manuever down the narrow trails of the typical woodsball field, I chose to put each "push-tanker" in his or her own personal armor shell suspended from the shoulders to leave the player's hands free.
- The single biggest challenge for the PUG concept has been to overcome the aesthetic prejudice of not so much players as field owners. I think this is because field owners tend to think of PAVs as big on-field props and/or Mobile Advertising Photo Ops, rather than as tactical simulation tools that could be utilized in a combined-arms approach. I believe that the generally dismal understanding and application of small-unit tactics at the typical scenario paintball game (especially compared to milsim airsoft or WW2 airsoft games) largely stems from the ignorance embodied in the attitudes of many prominent field owners and paintball game organizers. To a large degree, this is why I am no longer active in scenario paintball, but have moved to organizing and providing equipment for airsofters.
