Paillaco is a commune and city in southern Chile administered by the Municipality of Paillaco. It is located in Valdivia Province in Los Ríos Region, about 48km southeast of Valdivia. When Los Ríos Region was created it was meant that Paillaco would be in Ranco Province, but Paillaco's inhabitants and mayor opposed strongly and argued that Paillaco had much stronger links with Valdivia than La Unión capital of Ranco Province. The final project about the creation of Los Ríos Region was then changed to include Paillaco in Valdivia Province.
