Pai Ping-ping (白冰冰, Hanyu Pinyin: Bái Bīngbīng) is an actress[1], entertainer[2], singer, comedian,[3] and personality[4] from Taiwan, Republic of China.
Richard Lloyd-Parry of The Independent described Pai as the "Cilla Black of Taiwan."[5]
[edit] History
Born in Keelung, Pai became known for bantering in her local dialect. Beginning as a pop star, she later hosted a variety show.[5]
For a period she was married to Ikki Kajiwara, a Japanese comics writer. She had one daughter with Kajiwara, Pai Hsiao-yen, born in 1980.[6][7] After Hsiao-yen was kidnapped and murdered in 1997, believed by some to be a reprise for her owing money to organized crime, Pai Ping-ping became an advocate in favor of retaining the death penalty.[2] Lloyd-Parry described the attention around the murder of Pai's daughter as giving Pai "a greater, though more terrible, fame than she had as an entertainer."[5]
