[edit] Template:Britishmainlines

I do not understand the title of this template: if it is meant to be main lines, then why does it include all those small branch lines under the so-called "secondary lines"? Why are lines included which do not have an article to their name: none of them can be classed as main lines; nor can, for example, any of the small branch lines in Cornwall such as the Maritime, Riviera, St Ives Bay lines. Many of these are the result of a PR job to sell the lines on the part of National Rail and its predecessors: it does not follow that they have any importance to warrant inclusion here.

In addition (and I'm using this article as evidence):

  • The Aire Valley Line appears now to be called the Airedale Line
  • The Ayrshire Coast Line = Ayr Line
  • Lymington is not a line - the article leads to a train called the Lymington Flyer
  • Gospel Oak - Barking; Tattenham Corner; West London are simply London suburban lines
  • Honeybourne only apparently exists as a station, long since bereft of much of its traffic

I think that this whole Template needs a firm hand as to what it intends to be! Peter Shearan 19:47, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

  • Having written the above, (perhaps a bit lengthy?) I have begun to add to the Secondary Lines list those parts of the system which warrant - in my opinion! - inclusion. They are of sufficient length, and National Rail denotes them as being routes, rather than just lines Peter Shearan 15:09, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)
The use of mainline may be that the template has outgrown the original intentions, or it could be using the term to distinguish these railways from private/heritage lines and metro, light rail and underground networks. Thryduulf 22:01, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

This template is about to be deleted, per a recent TfD debate. -Splash 00:37, 1 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Leeds Railways

This title is completely misleading, since it leads into the services which are operated by the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority (see Metro (West Yorkshire) which I have recently written. OK so a lot of them begin/pass through Leeds, but they travel much further afield. I believe I cannot on my own change the title of a Category (correct? it says I cannot when I try anyway) but I think the title would be much better as West Yorkshire railways; and does it need to be a separate category: there is one called Category: Rail transport in Great Britain for instance. My recent article then covers what is now on the Leeds railways category: ie the Lines serving the area under the Metro banner. Surely a list is all that is required? (last part rewritten) Peter Shearan 15:50, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • I have also just discoved yet another superflous one: Category:Transport in Leeds which has exactly the same information: this is getting silly! There are at least a dozen interconnecting Categories for rail transport: they need some rationalistion, I'm sure. There isn't even a category of categories to find them all!!!!Peter Shearan 16:57, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)
