This page is a place to list foreign language articles on the English Wikipedia, to see if they can be translated before they are listed on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. If someone speaks the language the article is written in and can state that it is not worth translating, the item should be moved to AfD or tagged with {{prod}}.

TRANSLATION DEPARTMENT

RELATED PROJECTS

[edit] Standard procedures

If the article is a mere copy of (all or part of) an article in a foreign-language Wikipedia, it can just be tagged with {{db-foreign}} to get added to Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion: we want to discourage people who cut articles from one Wikipedia and paste to another without translating. If the intent is to ask for a translation of an article from a foreign-language Wikipedia, the correct place to do that is Wikipedia:Translation. As an alternative, you can leave a message on the contributing users talk-page using the templates from Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English/Templates for user talk pages or using {{UE}}.

Sometimes, legitimate articles are replaced by foreign-language content. In this case, the last English-language version should be restored from the history.

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be moved to AfD. When moving items to AfD, the boilerplate text on the article should be changed from {{notenglish}} to {{subst:afd}} and the other deletion steps should be carried out.

When listing a page here, you might want to find the Wikipedia:Embassy or Ambassador member of the Wikipedia that relates to the language the article is in and invite them to move the page to their own Wikipedia. If you don't even know what language the article is in you could use Language recognition chart and if that fails, some language recognition web site, such as xrce, or languid.cantbedone.org to find out. Please leave a note on this page if you do this to prevent duplication of messages. If you have come here from another Wikipedia, please note on this page what you think should be done with the article.

Please check for copyvio before listing here. (Articles which meet the criteria for CSD G12 can be speedily deleted with {{db-copyvio}}, others copyvios should be listed on WP:CP.) If you can tell what language an article is written in, that might help. Also consider posting the first line or so.

When pages listed here have been translated, their entry can be removed (or moved to cleanup if the translation needs another pair of eyes).

[edit] Boilerplate text

For a page that needs translation in its entirety (so it would be appropriate to delete if not fixed):

1. Use the notice {{Notenglish|NameOfLanguage}} if you know the language used, or {{Notenglish}} if you cannot identify the language of the page in question. The template will show up as:
2. Add a mention on this page, using:
{{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=NameOfLanguage| Comments= }}--~~~~ replacing NameOfLanguage with the English name of the language if you know which language was used, or {{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=unknown| Comments= }}--~~~~ if you cannot identify the language used
3. You may also choose to warn the contributing editor with {{Uw-english}}, the "use English" warning, or suggest to use a different language Wikipedia with {{contrib-xx1}}, where xx is the language code (available templates). An alternate template for identifying the article as having been listed here is {{uw-notenglish}}. Usage is {{subst:uw-notenglish|articlename|datein2weeksfromlisting}}~~~~.

If there is just a section that needs translation, that notice is inappropriate, so it's a little trickier:

1. Use [[Category:Wikipedia articles needing translation]].
2. Add an appropriate note at the top of the page in question, e.g.:
''Section [[#name-of-section|name-of-section]] contains text that needs translation into English.''.
3. Add a mention on this page.

If the article has been translated, but needs attention from someone approaching dual fluency in both languages:

1. Use the notice {{cleanup-translation}}, which will show up as:
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section on this page.

If you are not completely sure of what language an article is written in, feel free to use a language inspection site
and check the language recognition chart.
If you are sure, consider placing the corresponding template on the creator's talk page.

[edit] Nakakanbara District, Niigata

Lots and lots of Japanese. Again. -Yupik (talk) 01:34, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Translated. Some. Kubek15 (Sign!) (Contribs) (UBX) 14:43, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
Apparent machine translation, needs proofreading. -Yupik (talk) 23:13, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Only the first paragraph is a virtually unintelligible machine translation. The rest looks just fine. --Blanchardb-MeMyEarsMyMouth-timed 01:04, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
Moving back up here -- there's a timeline which is mostly untranslated, and the machine translation is not intelligible (i.e. not in any usable state for an article), so I've restored the Japanese text. nneonneo talk 03:04, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
This entry cannot stay here indefinitely. What about simply commenting out the untranslated portion? --Blanchardb-MeMyEarsMyMouth-timed 20:10, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
I've left a message for one of the users who seems to be translating most of this type of article; hopefully I get a response. nneonneo talk 04:13, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Carlos Domingomes

The language of this article is Portuguese. Cunard (talk) 00:36, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

  • It's a bio of a Lisbon university professor who is also a Portuguese movie producer. Probably notable. I wonder why it's not on Portuguese Wikipedia - the article should be transwikied and probably also translated for us here. I didn't do a copyvio check. Cbdorsett (talk) 04:20, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
    • I don't think he is a movie producer in the sense we usually think of them. It appears that he is a director of academic/experimental films. He isn't listed in the Internet Movie Database. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 06:00, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Baek Ji Young discography

The language of this article is Korean. Track titles need to be transliterated into the Latin alphabet to be adequate for an English encyclopedia. Blanchardb-MeMyEarsMyMouth-timed 16:53, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

  • Am I the only one who has a problem with track lists? That's all this article is. If db-band does not cover it, maybe bare track lists should be added to the grounds for speedy deletion. Any thoughts? --Cbdorsett (talk) 13:51, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sholiyarkal

  • Was written in strongly Tamil-accented English with names in the Tamil alphabet. I transcribed those names. Needs tidying by someone with dual fluency and knowing Hindu religious culture. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 11:43, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Meganoidi

This apparently started out as a machine translation of it:Meganoidi and could use some heavy cleanup work. I'm quite familiar with Italian and think I could do a translation into something more closely resembling English, but help would be appreciated -- Ferkelparade π 23:11, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Notability could be an issue. There are strict rules for music groups. Itsmejudith (talk) 20:01, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Transat Jacques Vabre

The language of this article is unknown. The section Transat Jacques Vabre#Palmarès de la course needs translation. It is most probably written in Brazilian language--NAHID 08:44, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

The creator has translated it into English, though the article still needs cleanup. The original language was French. Hut 8.5 09:40, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Did some cleanup. Some formatting that seems to be standard on French WP needs to be removed, .e.g the templates for 1st, 2nd. Itsmejudith (talk) 10:03, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Only internal links need attention now, post-translation cleanup done. Itsmejudith (talk) 20:00, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Kara Melek (TV Series)

This seems to be a translation of the Turkish version. Needs some tidying up. Akerbeltz (talk) 15:16, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Arcaya

The language of this article is Spanish. nneonneo talk 17:16, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

I roughly translated the article. Kubek15 (Sign!) (Contribs) (UBX) 21:38, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Does anyone know the Wikipedia policy on genealogy pages? This article is about three generations of the Arcaya family, and it contains little other than lists of children and short descriptions of the various families. Maybe some of the individual members of this family might qualify as notable, such as Álvaro Enrique Arzú Irigoyen who was president of Guatemala from 1996 to 2000. My personal opinion is that pages of this sort are not encyclopedic and should be excluded. Cbdorsett (talk) 05:02, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
In short: Names and Genealogy are not suitable for articles. Surnames maybe. See:Wikipedia:Deletion policy/names and surnames. So I'd say that the first (3?) paragraphs, a ver few others further down (heraldry, general references to world dispersion), and maybe a 'see also' in disambig style, may be worthy. - Nabla (talk) 19:07, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
This may be (at least in part) about a Basque medieval "clan", I need to check that because in that case I think it might be notable. Either way, we can keep the page because there's a town by that name (Arcaya/Arkaia) which has no page yet. It might make more sense to turn it into a geo stub and keep some of the genealogoy stuff under a section of "historic families" or "famous ppl from..." or something like that. Akerbeltz (talk) 15:30, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] June 2008

[edit] Centro de estudios de Emprendimientos Solidarios

The language of this article is Spanish. This article appeared as needing a category. It seems to be about a Chilean University department Malcolma (talk) 09:54, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Best merged with the article on the university, as a single paragraph addition.Itsmejudith (talk) 19:38, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] الوشواشة

The language of this article is unknown, possibly Arabic. TNX-Man 19:46, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Arabic. It's about a region in Tunisia near Kasserine and Jebel ech Chambi. nneonneo talk 23:20, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Another example that proves Google translate should be used for only a rough idea of what the article is about. I checked it for copyvio, and it seems OK - Google couldn't find the text anywhere else besides here. It's a notable geo stub and should be translated properly. Cbdorsett (talk) 13:20, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
    • It is important to find the corrrect transliteration of the name of this place in order to use the correct title. I tried to find it in Google, but of no avail. The current title, Alohaouach, is certainly wrong from what I know of the Arabic alphabet. It is more like Alushwasha or Alouchouacha according to the French system. Hard to tell from an abjad.  Andreas  (T) 13:42, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Article transwikied to ar-wiki: ar:الوشواشة. It is probably still suitable for this wiki, if it can be properly translated. nneonneo talk 15:51, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
  • The "correct" transliteration would be Al-Washāwisha, but in Tunisia, it is common to use French-like spelling, which would make it Al-Ouachaouicha. I'm not sure what the current consensus is among editors who work on articles with Arabic-language content. Cbdorsett (talk) 08:26, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
    • I moved the page. Still, no such entry in Google. There is a place in Tunisia called Koudiat el Ouachouacha, but it is not near Jebel ech Chambi or Kasserine. Furthermore, according to Tunesian spelling, the article should be eland not al, like in ech Chambi.  Andreas  (T) 21:11, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tesch Aylton

The language of this article is Spanish?. Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 09:32, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Cetis 156

The language of this article is unknown. SimonP (talk) 14:41, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Spanish. It's about a prep school in Tijuana, Baja California (Mexico). I don't know what the policies are for articles about this type of school. Cbdorsett (talk) 04:12, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
Also Carlos contreras, Eduardo patron lizarraga, and Luchador callejero extremo ultra violento by the same user. - SimonP (talk) 14:44, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
