Notice
Notice: This template should not be used except:
a) For historical topics on Northern Ireland of the period 1921-1972 (government use)
b) For N.I. sport-related topics (the only context in which this flag remains in unofficial use)
c) For Unionist/Loyalist (never Republican/Nationalist) topics from 1921 onward (unofficial use)
d) In other contexts if and only if the limited applicability of the flag is made clear.

I forgot that {{Warning}} centers everything (there is NO way to make it stop either, even with CSS; believe me, I've tried!) Also, shouldn't the Unionist date range be inclusive (as in my alt. version)? And where did 1921 come from? Isn't it 1953 (and could have been 1924, but not actual until 1953)? Changed that too. Also did XHTML fix (<br /> not <br>). Added sport note that both clarifies it and the others, really. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 22:29, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Added 4th idea. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 22:39, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

And 5th. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 22:39, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

More concise 5th, but Republican and Nationalist need wikilinks done. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 22:41, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

What do you think of this version? — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 22:55, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
The reason of using the range 1921-72 is because the flag was devised from the coat of arms in which the design is seen in the crest which date from I think 1925, so it is generaly accepted that its usage should cover the whole period of the Parliament of Northern Ireland 1921-72.--padraig3uk 22:45, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
I s'pose, but I gather that the flag didn't even exist until 1953... If you're sure about the general acceptance thing, no objection from me, other than I think it should be inclusive of the date range when it comes to Unionists (i.e., they didn't start liking and using the flag when it was abandoned, they were big fans of it, and the arms, the entire time, as it were.) — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 22:55, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
I think trying to restrict usage to after 1953 would cause more trouble then its worth, the flag is generaly accepted as the Flag of the government of the NIHOC. this is what flags.net and Encyclopdeia Britannica say about the flag
Flags.net says: This flag is a banner of the arms of the old Government of Northern Ireland. The flag ceased to be official in 1973, but continues to be used by Unionists. On no account should it be used for official purposes.
Encyclopdeia Britannica says: According to British tradition, a coat of arms or flag is granted to the government of a territory, not to the people residing there. Therefore, when the government of Northern Ireland was disbanded in March 1972, its arms and flag officially disappeared; however, the flag continues to be used by groups (such as sports teams) representing the territory in an unofficial manner.--padraig3uk 23:04, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Works for me. I'm going to attempt a code clean up with CSS here in a sec... — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 23:10, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
PS: I believe Britannica to be incorrect, or at least vague in that "official" has more than one meaning. The flag is not governmentally official for anything any longer, but it is the official NIR flag for the purposes of numerous sports governing bodies. I'd just as soon let the warning tag's usage of "official" stand; it should be obvious that "official" means "official as to sport federations' rules" not "official as to Her Majesty's decree", from the context. :-) — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 23:28, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
I'm pretty happy with it now that I've made the code leaner. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 23:17, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
PS: Line D is an "escape clause" for usages we haven't thought of ourselves. (Who knows? A List of flags featuring human body parts or whatever.) — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 23:21, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

So Should I post it here Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Flag Template now to see what the reaction is.--padraig3uk 23:22, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Sounds like a plan. I'd give it a topic something like ==Proposal for warning against inappropriate use of Northern Ireland flag== and ask specifically that it be added to the top of the documentation of:
  1. {{Country data Northern Ireland}}
  2. {{NIR}}
  3. Any similar templates
  4. The image pages of the flag on both WP and Commons.
just to cover all the bases. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 23:28, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

I posted it, I changed the sport context to semi-official rather then unofficial.--padraig3uk 23:43, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
