[edit] Island area
Referring to the linked article the island area is 133,918 acres what makes 209.249 sq mi. It makes the island third largest in contiguous USA. Anybody noticed that? Foxtrot 00:29, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
I think there's some confusion going on with Padre Island vs. South Padre Island. I added it back to the longest islands list.
UPDATE: Okay, now I'm very very confused; Google Maps indicate that opposite Port Mansfield on the mainland there's a channel that divides Padre Island with South Padre Island; however in other places I've seen the two treated as one contiguous island (although there's no way to get from one to the other without going for a swim). Is there a geographer in the house? --12.47.123.121 01:56, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
- The channel is mentioned in the article:
- "Since 1964, the island has been divided by the artificial Port Mansfield Channel, and as a result, "North Padre Island" and "South Padre Island" are often used to refer to the separate portions of the island."
- The channel being unnatural and apparently trying to fill itself in, probably means that from a geographic/geological standpoint, it's still one island. I can't speak in any sort of official or expert capacity though. -- Cyrius|✎ 00:58, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
