Paddy Power Gold Cup
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Paddy Power Gold Cup is a Grade 3 National Hunt horse race in the United Kingdom for five-year-old and above horses. It is run over a distance of 2 miles 4½ furlongs (4,124 metres) on the Old Course at Cheltenham Racecourse in mid November.
It is a major early-season handicap chase, and has been won by many top class horses. There are fifteen fences to be jumped in the race.
It was first run in 1960 as the Mackeson Gold Cup, and continued with that name until 1995. The following year it became the Murphy's Gold Cup, sponsored by Murphy's, and changed in 2000 to the Thomas Pink Gold Cup, sponsored by the clothing retailer Thomas Pink. It has been known by its present name since 2003, when the bookmaking company Paddy Power took over the sponsorship.
Martin Pipe trained seven winners of the race from 1996 to 2005. All except Shooting Light were owned by David Johnson.
