[edit] Huaca people?

When I was visiting Peru in 1997, we had pachamanca, but I was under the impression that it was a tradition that stemmed back to a period earlier than the Incan Empire. I was told by the elders that it was also a feasting event performed by the Huaca people (for which the city Huancayo is named), who lived in the high Andes prior to the Incas. Any thoughts?
