The Pacific Classic Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race for thoroughbred race horses aged three years or older run on synthetic dirt over a distance of one and one-quarter miles (10 furlongs, 2km). The race is held on the third Sunday in August and currently offers a purse of $1,000,000. A preparation for the Breeders' Cup Classic, since 1993 it has had Grade 1 status.
The Pacific Classic Stakes is the prestige event of the Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California as one of the top races on the West Coast. This year's renewal of the Pacific Classic is a part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge, where the winner of the race will automatically earn a spot in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Classic at Oak Tree.
On August 24, 2003 Julie Krone became the first female rider to win a million-dollar horse race when she rode Jenny and Sidney Craig's Candy Ride to victory in the Pacific Classic while setting a new track record of 1:59.11 for the 1¼ miles distance.
Previously raced on dirt, in 2007 for the first time the race was run on Del Mar Racetrack's new synthetic Polytrack surface.
