Pacanów is the seat of Gmina Pacanów. It has a population of 1137. The village's Sołtys is Jan Łuszcz and the Vogt is Wiesław Skop. In modern times the village is partly noted for its connection to the fictional character Koziołek Matołek.

The town dates back to the thirteenth century and in the fourteenth century it was larger than Kielce. However it faced a decline due to a cholera epidemic in 1700 and ultimately remained a village.
