P K Kelkar Library (Formerly Central Library) is an academic Library of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK) with a collection of more than 3,00,000 volumes and subscriptions to more than 1000 periodicals. The library was renamed to its present name in year 2003 after Dr. P K Kelkar, the first director of the institute. It is one of the best libraries in the nation housed in a three-storey building with the total 6973 m². floor area. The Abstracting and Indexing periodicals, Microform and CD-ROM databases. technical reports, Standards and thesis are important part of this collection. Each year, on an average 4500 books and journal volumes are added to the collection. The total collection breakup is:

  • Books (general and reference) 175,000
  • Cartographic materials 500
  • Machine-readable databases 25
  • Periodicals (back volumes) 135,000
  • Technical Reports 25,000
  • IIT Kanpur thesis 15,000
  • ISI standards 10,000
  • Periodicals on current subscription 1,200

Following is the area-wise breakup of the Library's collections:

  • Technology 32%
  • Humanities and Social Sciences 28%
  • Other Area 5%
