The Polytechnic University of the Philippines, San Pedro Extension (PUP-SPL) (Filipino: Politeknikong Unibersidad ng Pilipinas, Sudlong ng San Pedro) is one of the two extension campuses of the university system in Laguna Province. It is located in the Municipality of San Pedro, Laguna Province.

BRIEF HISTORY

Located alongside the railway tracks inside a GSIS- owned low-income subdivision, PUP San Pedro stands on a 1.1 hectare campus co-existing peacefully with hundreds of informal settlers whose mushrooming shanties continue to choke the area. Its location closely identifies that of the main campus in Sta. Mesa as well as other extensions similarly situated. Hence, it does not belie its intention-that of catering to the deserving underprivileged youth PUP has a preferential option for.

Established on April 9, 2002 as a open university center by virtue of a memorandum of agreement signed by then San Pedro, Laguna mayor Felicismo A. Vierneza and former PUP president Dr. Ofelia M. carague, PUP San Pedro initially offered a single curricular program-Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurial Management. Two sections totaling 119 students enrolled in the courses were housed in a borrowed two room building at the San Pedro ManPower Center at the Elvinda Subdivision. Chairs some 120 of them were donated by Laguna governor Teresita Lazaro and a few other amenities were supplied by the local government.

Its officer-in-charge later designated director was Prof. Angelito D. Roldan who carried a concurrent position as administrative officer of PUP Taguig Extension. He was assisted by his wife, Professor Susan Roldan who served as registrar. They held office under the giant acacia trees that covered the area.

A year after in March 2003, PUP San Pedro moved to the Pacita Astrodome where it conducted classes in makeshift Classrooms set apart with wooden dividers. A new program was introduced Bachelor in Secondary Education with majors in English and mathematics. Its enrolment jumped to 307 students who were now supervised by a director. After a 6 months stay in its temporary shelter, PUP san Pedro transferred to its own campus at Pacita II in a yet to be completed 2 storey building constructed by the municipal government on a 1.1 hectare lot donated by the Pacita Square Homeowners Association. The Proliferation of informal settlers in the area had to be checked and the putting up a state college on the space offered a win win solution for the residents.

Completed seven months after, the building was inaugurated on Nov. 7, 2003. On its third year enrolment rose to 430 and upon the request of the Local School Board offered a four year program in Bachelor in Elementary Education. On PUP's centenary year, PUP San Pedro's faculty took part in the historic staging of the biggest human rainbow at the Rizal Park, Which landed in the Guinness Book of World Records. The Extension likewise gained some degree of recognition when its bet, Christine Dalud, bested several contestants from the main campus and the branches to bag the centennial Essay Writing Contest in English.

On its fourth year the Extension had a total population of 694 students or 14 sections enrolled in 3 degree programs BSEM, BSEd and BEED. the following year, the BEED program, due to the lack of enrollees and the wanting of support form the new local school board chair, had to be phased out. This year saw the coming of age of PUP San Pedro as it began to take an active role in the affairs of the municipality particularly in it is tourism program. The Director and the registrar were active members of the San Pedro Tourism and Cultural Affairs Councils. Team PUP, trained by Prof. John Paul Doming, Principal dancer of the PUP Maharlika Dance Troupe, emerged winner in the annual sampaguita inspired street dancing festival. Also a member of the Philippine Baranggay Dance Troupe, Professor Domingo competed in the festival the following year and landed first runner up.

On April 27, 2006, PUP San Pedro held its first annual commencement speaker. PUP acting president Dr. Samuel M Salvador conferred the degree Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurial Management to 45 graduates topped by its most senior member, Ms. Elvira Mallari.

School Year 2006-2007 proved a banner year for PUP san Pedro .In the field of culture and sports, the Extension made waves. Entered an underdog in the newly organized Universities and Colleges athletic Association- san Pedro (UCAA-SP) PUP San Pedro took the field of 8 colleges by surprise- bagging the championship in men's volleyball and narrowly missing the men's caging plum to land first runner up. In the search of the annual Hiyas ng San Pedro, Camille Estrella, a second year English major, more than made up for her lack in height with her intelligence whish earned her the nod of the judges to win the crown. Not to be outdone, Israel Ortega, a third year math major was elected junior municipal mayor and gained the opportunity to look first hand into the system of town governance.

With the opening of the courses Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT), enrolment this year soared to 722 for a total of 16 sections. The slight increase in enrolment did not pose a problem since a classroom donated by the PUP Scholarship Foundation headed by former PUP regent and current CEO of the Corporate Holding Management Noel Gonzales was completed i time for the opening of the school year.

The 2nd commencement exercises with outgoing San Pedro mayor Felicismo Vierneza as commencement speaker was held April 12, 2007 at the newly air conditioned Pacita Astrodome. A total of 119 graduates topped by Christine T. Dalud, PUP SP's first cum laude, were conferred their degrees in entrepreneurial management and secondary education with majors in English and mathematics.

PUP San Pedro has gradually risen from anonymity. Though hobbled by an acute lack of budget that has rendered its facilities thoroughly wanting and its faculty mostly made up of part timers, PUP San Pedro is not wanting in vision. The dedication of its administration run by a husband a wife tandem who sees PUP San Pedro as mission may prove as yet its dominant force for PUP San Pedro to move on. Already, the faculty profile boasts of several doctors, experts in their fields of specialization. Gradually with the full cooperation of the student council and organization officers, the facilities have been augmented, its library now has a good collection of books, and its IT Lab slowly adding computer sets. All these developments auger well for PUP San Pedro. In due time, PUP San Pedro will be able to attain its self-imposed vision - that of being recognized as center of academic competence whose milieu shall extend not only throughout the province of Laguna and the whole nation but also not in the very distant future the rest of the worked.

PUP San Pedro believes that every one deserves a dream. Meanwhile, this little academic institution built along the railway tracks and thriving in peace with its host of informal settlers, has committed itself to helping realize that dream.
