P. K. H. Tharakan

P K Hormis Tharakan, an IPS officer of Kerala cadre (1968 batch) was the chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), India's external intelligence agency. He was appointed to this role in February 2005. He belongs to the 1968 batch of the Indian Police Service and was previously Kerala's Director General of Police.

Tharakan succeeded C. D. Sahay, a 1967 batch officer of the IPS' Karnataka cadre on January 31,2005. He handed over charg of this post to Ashok Chaturvedi. He was instrumental in starting the Nuclear Command Authority in the R&AW

Tharakan retired on January 31,2007. At present he is posted as Advisor to the Governor of Karnataka, when the state was brought under the President's Rule.
