P A Venkatachalam, (born:1934-12-18) is an Indian academician. He was one of the first 10 in India to complete a PhD in Computer Science. He is currently Professor of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering at University of Petronas, Malaysia since 2001. Prior to his work with Petronas University, Dr. Venkatachalam served as Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Science, Malaysia from 1988-2000.
Professor Venkatachalam was the Head of the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering at College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University from 1978-1987. He founded the Computer Science department of Anna University in 1978 and was its head until 1988. He also founded the School of Computer Science and Engineering of Anna University in 1986 and was its first Director. He introduced Bachelor, Master's and Post Graduate Diploma Programs in Computer Science and Engineering. Dr. Venkatachalam also introduced MCA Program in Tamil Nadu State.
Professor Venkatachalam has supervised many PhD students and Master's students and has published over 120 articles in many reputed journals, magazines and conferences. He has organised several international conferences and has served as program committee member for numerous conferences around the world. In 1986, Professor Venkatachalam was seconded by Government of India to serve as a visiting faculty to Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand where he helped AIT with setting up the Computer Science program. He serves as fellow of many professional organisations including CSI, IETE, Indian Academy of Sciences, IEEE, and others. He has written many books on Electrical, Electronics and Computer Science. Dr. Venkatachalam has served as member of several committees of Universities and Engineering colleges in India, as committee member for industries such as ITI, and as committee member for Research Organisations such as ISRO. He has also served as member of many committees of Tamilnadu State and Central Governments. Dr. Venkatachalam is also listed among the top 2000 Engineers in the world who have contributed to the field of Engineering.
Professor Venkatachalam is well known for his research work that result in simple, but practical and cost effective solutions that are useful and affordable by public. His research work in Telemedicine and Bio Medical Enginneering has earned him many world wide recognitions. His research work has won him several industry awards, and industry and government funded research projects. In 2006-07, he won the Moscow Award for Best Invention in Medical Science from the Russian Government. In 2007-08, he won the most number of gold medals by an individual in the world's largest highly competitive invention expo and conference INPEX held in USA for his invention in the field of Medical Science and Engineering. In 2007-08, he won two gold medals for his research work and invention in the field of Medical Science in a world renowned international invention expo held in Brussels, Belgium.
Professor Venkatachalam was born in Paruvachi, a village in Erode district. He holds a B.E. Honours degree in Electrical Engineering from A.C.College of Technology, Karaikudi, M.Tech degree in Control Systems from IIT Kharagpur, and a PhD in Computer Science (Theory of Computer Science) from IIT Kanpur.
