[edit] Requested move

I wonder if the word Cardinal is desirable in the title. I suppose not. – On the other hand, õ is certainly not correct; the actual ő should be substituted by o. --Adam78 16:14, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • Support We should use an unaccented o for the moment, with a redirect from umlaut. Gdr 20:02, 2005 Apr 7 (UTC)
  • Support Only those accents are removed in the English Wikipedia which cannot be displayed in titles; all the other diacritics are kept (see eg. Category:Hungarian writers). ő is never substituted by õ; the latter is used on its own right in other languages. As is noted below, cardinal is kept in names. – Thus, in my opinion, this seems to be the only option in accordance with current Wikipedia conventions. I encourage you to check it with a few minutes' investigation. Adam78 10:20, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Discussion

"Cardinal" in the name as it is adheres to normal naming standards and our MoS. Erdõ seems correct according to http://www.cardinalrating.com/cardinal_29.htm http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/berdo.html. I therefore oppose. violet/riga (t) 16:23, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Oppose removing the cardinal title, but if õ is incorrect and ő is technically impossible, what about using ö, as is commonly done when writing Hungarian names in other languages? / Uppland 16:50, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The interposition of "Cardinal" matches the rule given and justified at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (names and titles)#Clerical names. Debates about that convention should be at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (names and titles), not here. As for the diacritical, I note that on http://www.katolikus.hu/dioc_ang.html it is given with the double acute; on Google the double acute is the most common form of his name on sites in the .hu domain. We should use an unaccented o for the moment, with a redirect from umlaut. Gdr 20:02, 2005 Apr 7 (UTC)

I've reviewed my vote on the subject and, as the voting goes so far, Péter Cardinal Erdo is the favourite. violet/riga (t) 11:50, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)
