Questions:

• Who gave McKearney a "severe beating" in 1972, RUC, UDR, British Army?
• What exactly does it mean that he spent six weeks on remand? Does this mean that he was held but not charged?
• What prison was he held in? I assume it was the Maze/Long Kesh as I vaguely remember hearing about a break out from there in 1983.
• Did Tommy McKearney die on hunger strike in 1980 or 1981? I thought that the first one to die was Sands in 81, no?
• What exactly does the "third phase of the armed struggle" in IRA thinking mean?

It was the RUC who gave McKearney a severe beating. He spent six weeks on remand because adequate evidence was not gathered. (He was charged with blowing up the post office in Moy.) He was held in Long Kesh. Tommy Mckearney did not die. The 1980 hunger strikes resulted in no deaths unlike the 1981 hunger strike which ended with 10 deaths. The third phase represents the final phase of the armed struggle. During the mid eighties the IRA wanted to establish liberated areas and start a transition from guerrilla to conventional warfare. With the Loughall ambush in May 1987 and the seizure of the 150 tons of weaponry aboard the Eksund in 1987 this strategy effectively collapsed.
