[edit] Lacrosse in Australia

Hi Daren, Luke Oswald here. I saw your note in the lacrosse discussion about the very USA-focussed article and agree. I am taking it upon myself to create a page called "Lacrosse in Australia" (not published as yet) which will have info about the history, development and future of the game in Australia. I have already gathered some records of national championships winners and league winners in the various states, though some lists are incomplete, as well as a page about the Australian Lacrosse League. As more info is gathered it may be necessary to split the page up, maybe have pages for each state, we'll see how it goes. I think the way forward with this is to set up a WikiProject. I will invite other people to add info as they please. There are quite a few aussies that go on The Lacrosse Forums that would probably be able to add info. It will also be necessary to back up info as required should people get too biased with their articles!!

[edit] Adelaide Uni Lacrosse

Hello Daren. At the moment, the club does appear to meet the notability guidelines in that does not appear to be sufficiently sportingly notable, as it is an amateur/social-level club, and isn't at first-class standard. The historical notability is quite weak - it has been around a long time, but many old high schools also have old sports clubs, and many of these have been deleted also. The third thing, as a declared party in the subject of the article, that will also raise eyebrows, as it is peripherally related to WP:AUTO -atuobiography is discouraged.Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 02:53, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

I have looked at the page and have replied there. I deleted all the other UniMelb sports teams a while before I stumbled across the lacrosse club.Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 04:38, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Barossa Germans

Where to next? Rewrite it in your own words. Gsl 07:29, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

Just received an email by an author of some of the work. He claims copyright and does not want his work used on wikipedia. I'm not really sure he did most of the work on this as it seems to appear in many places and is claimed by them or is allowed to be copied. In any case I'm quite prepared to find other sources or even track down original newspaper articles etc. Ozdaren 13:17, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
There is nothing wrong with using the article you copied as a source for your own article but you can't necessarily copy verbatim. As it says down the bottom of every edit page "Only public domain resources can be copied without permission—this does not include most web pages." And someone saying their work is "free for republishing" or "freely redistributable" does not necessarily mean it is compatible with the GFDL -- they might not want their work modified, and they certainly might want to be attributed as the source. So the safest course is to write the article in your own words and list any web pages you used as sources in an ==External links== section. Gsl 23:21, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
You might want to take a look at / help out with this in-progress article if you're interested in German history in SA. Interestingly, I only just got up to the Barossa Valley part of it so if wish to - please feel free to assist! michael talk 08:11, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
I give in. There are too many ins and outs of wikipedia for a novice user to fathom. I think I will limit myself to adding minor bits of content to existing articles and tidying. I'm going about this all the wrong way. Ozdaren 10:14, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
Give in? Why? We just can't copy other stuff - we write our own! michael talk 10:16, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
No I understand the principles of copyright. I even looked up the Australian Copyright Council pages to assertain how far the laws go in Australia. What I meant was a personal reflection on the lack of depth in my contribution to wikipedia so far. Perhaps I gave too much of a public airing to a private musing. Ozdaren 12:38, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
Hmmm, now if I understand that correctly, and I'm rusty ;), unfortunately I don't really know any one who speaks it as a first language any more - the only person I knew who spoke it all the time sadly passed away late last year, and she was about 75... So no real hope there for anyone under 60! There are plenty of "authentic" Old Germans in the Barossa who try it on for the tourists though. As an aside, though I can understand Deutsch, Ich spreche nicht Deutsches (roughly correct, ja?). I can piece together much kaputt Deutsches! Prost, ABVS1936 17:48, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] .svf files

Hi Daren.

Photoshop is designed as a raster image editor, and so it is not equipped to edit .svg files. A .svg file is xml, so if you want to, you can just edit the file with a text editor. This is what I do.

If you want to change the color of a solid blade, you would need to change the bold text:

[edit] English Lacrosse

You asked whether I knew more about the ELA - sadly no. I've moved overseas so anything I did know is certainly out of date now. I know it used to consist of the NELA and SEMLA (north and south) but I see that someone else (Flandersuea) has edited the page to mention NEMLA and SEMLA - perhaps the name changed? I think I'll drop a line to the ELA, they're bound to be able to find someone who can add some useful info. Thrapper 19:54, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] A question about the article on Udo Lindenberg

Hi, Daren!

Thanks for your contribution, I used to be a fan of his songs.

In the album tables, I guess the letters D, A, CH mean Germany (Deutschland), Austria and Switzerland (Confederatio Helvetica), what else? But I don't understand what precisely the figures stand for.

Would you be kind enough to explain?

[edit] Batu Lintang camp

Hi Daren, thanks for your lovely comments - it's always great to get positive feedback (said she, fluffing up her feathers). About using Commonwealth English: the Wikipedia Manual of Style basically says (and I'm paraphrasing wildly here) if the topic is specific to a country or nationality, then that version of English should be used; otherwise the English of the original author should be used. As I'm English, and as far as I've found out there were only a handful of Americans in the camp, which was liberated by the Australians with some assistance from the Americans, there was no reason to write in American English. (I did have to change my article on Agnes Newton Keith to US English, which felt very odd). The relevant bit of the MoS is at [1]. The US/Commonwealth English malarkey can get quite heated, with people changing spelling to what they perceive as the "correct"" spelling.

BTW - I see you are a rowing coach. I rowed at stroke and 6 for a few years, but sadly now live in an area of shallow chalk streams rather than decent rivers, so haven't got in a Janousek for quite a while now ... My one claim to fame was that I (many moons ago) rowed in the same race as Steve Redgrave - Head of the River in London, with the men's crews setting off first. I think he was in the bar long before we even started, but technically it was the same race. Didn't beat his crew (Thames Tradesmen, I think - but this was some 20-odd years ago ...), mind you! Cheers Jasper33 10:43, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Nah, Leicester Rowing Club - far less glamorous. We used to row on the canal which was only wide enough to turn fours, so our first crew outing as an eight was for the race itself on the very choppy, tidal Thames. I have a photo taken from a bridge in which we are all miraculously in time, pulling nice puddles and looking pretty together. Pretty fluky, as it must have been the only such stroke in the whole race! I'd rowed in eights at uni in the early eighties so having to downsize to fours at Leicester was a bummer. That, and getting gobbed on from a bridge by the football supporters on their way to/from Filbert Road football ground ... Maybe I don't miss rowing after all! Jasper33 15:32, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Ozdaren, you make life so much easier for some reason... and who is this guy who seems insistent on edit ONLY St. Mark's College pages to get them deleted? Cheers, ABVS1936 16:58, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Daren, the aforesaid stirrer seems intent on removing the pages through lack of notability, since there is clearly no lack of sources for the article content. Wikipedia as I understand it has two thresholds of verifiability - in order to be included at all, the article must cite sources that determine its notability, that is, whether it is commented on by outside unrelated bodies (such as a newspaper) in any great detail. Once that is determined, article size is not limited, you can go for your life with additional sources including as published by the article subject, but it must first be determined to be notable. As for AUBC, we both know that it is notable, but the sources on the internet don't really determine this - we've only determined the notability of various members of the club. What's needed is a few newspaper articles commenting on the club. I think there was one a few years ago when the Men's Eight rowed a 5:46 at mannum, that'd do. Or anything else from the 'Tiser. Do they have an electronic database that one can look up?--Yeti Hunter 05:57, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] University Oval, (Park 12) Adelaide

The significant part of the message is

needs sources or references that appear in reliable, third-party publications . Alone, primary sources and sources affiliated with the subject of this article are usually not sufficient for an accurate encyclopedia article

Adelaide City Council would be a primary source in regards to the parks and ovals it maintains. Garrie 23:51, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

I am not disputing the reliability of ACC. It is just that in this instance they are a Primary source. As such they cannot be used to assert the notability of the parks they maintain, just as they cannot be used to assert the notability of the Mayor, or the Town Hall, or anything else for which they are a primary source of information. Or are the parks maintained by some body other than the ACC? In which case the article is misleading but the primary source tag is misplaced.Garrie 01:30, 14 June 2007 (UTC) In any case - there are now ample secondary sources and the tag is no longer appropriate. But I disagee with your edit comment that "it was totally unnecessary in the 1st place" - that is the type of comment which is best left off edit summaries, it tends to inflame situations and doesn't add anything to your editing. You obviously don't see it as releveant at the time you remove it, stating "Article is not totally reliant on primary sources" would be a lot less likely to lead to an arguement. Garrie 01:38, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

I didn't challenge the reliability of ACC.

I didn't say anyone used primary sources "badly".

What I put the tag there for, was because primary sources cannot be used to assert notability. And a common opinion is, all articles should be about notable topics and assert that notability.

Regardless of weather you or I agree with WP:N, "a lot of contributors do" so meeting it will help ensure that a given article does not get deleted.

The problem has been fixed now that secondary sources are on the article. I am sure every contributor has different opinions about how to make Wikipedia "better". In regard to this one article, my opinion was, it needed material to be added to it which could be cited to sources independent of ACC. This has been done and now the article is better than it was.Garrie 02:06, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Sundaymail97winning4.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Sundaymail97winning4.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 12:02, 3 July 2007 (UTC). Hi. The reason I uploaded the first one was for his involvement in the South Australian general election, 1975, and it was the only image available. I found a much better one which actually gives his face definition. As it is being used under fair-use which is in itself dubious, having two images im sure wouldn't last long. In that case my suggestion would be to get the entire source photo and not just the crop, and really try and disassociate it from Millhouse without making the photo useless as a reference to him and Prosh.
