[edit] Ty

Hey, thanks for the revert on my userpage. My pages first vandalism, makes me feel all warm inside :P. Ferdia O'Brien (T)/(C) 00:46, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

See it as appreciation of your anti-vandalism work, you've deserved it ;) --Oxymoron83 00:49, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
Ha, I've had your page on my watchlist since it was automatically added when I left that ty, and your page see's a crazy amount of vandalism :D Ferdia O'Brien (T)/(C) 03:32, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] thanks!

I wanted to thank you for locking the topic Hawaii, if I may ask how did you do it and what was different then what I did? --Talk to Stealth500 (talk) 12:03, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello Stealth500, adding a template to a page doesn't protect it ;) Only admins can protect pages, the RFPP request you made afterwards was the correct way. Regards --Oxymoron83 17:48, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] User 24.86.128.209 - request for help

As you recently blocked User 24.86.128.209 you may be interested that him/her has just vandalised Aviation in World War I. A notice on User talk:24.86.128.209 says they will be blocked immediately if they abuse editing privileges. Thanks. MilborneOne (talk) 22:35, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your note. They seem to have stopped now, if they come back, just give a level 4 warning and report to WP:AIV if they continue to vandalize as I'm not always online. Regards --Oxymoron83 00:14, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for reverting my user page and dealing with that IP. =) -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 00:49, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

No problem, I saw too late that this person has been there before, so he/she was able to hit it twice ;) --Oxymoron83 00:52, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
It's okay. He's been bugging me for the past few weeks. Lucky me. =) It's related to Trenton, Ontario. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 00:57, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
I just blocked 205.189.25.192/26 for 3 hours (only 64 IPs), where all the recently used are inside. Maybe if the older IPs also match this range, a longer block can be considered due to the small range. Let's see... --Oxymoron83 01:00, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
At least when he's at University he can be stopped, there are only sporadic unrelated conributions from this range ever made, so a some day long block should be ok. The other IPs are too widespread. --Oxymoron83 01:40, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, he has been using the university addresses recently, but used a DSL connection before and a cable modem once. He's not very creative so it's easy enough to figure out who it is. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 20:00, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Honor Killing

Hello,

There is a discussion going on here about whether sati, an ancient form of suicide in which a woman voluntarily immolates herself, is considered honor killing. Since you have contributed to the Hinduism page, I thought you would be the right person to ask. I hope you will contribute to the discussion. Thanks

Thanks for the invitation, but I've only reverted vandalism two months ago and am not familiar with this topic otherwise. Sorry --Oxymoron83 01:44, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello Tambaso, and welcome to Wikipedia. You can edit semi-protected pages 4 days upon registration. In the meantime you can follow the links I've put on your talk page to learn some basics about Wikipedia. In case you can't wait 4 days, you can propose changes at the article's talk page, what is also recommended for controversial changes you want to make later. [edit] User 207.28.62.253

Thanks for blocking this guy, but is 56 hours really enough? As you can see [1], this guy is just playing around. How about a permanent block? Thanks. Newguy34 (talk) 03:31, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello Newguy34, IP addresses are never permanently blocked, because they change their owners and you don't know how many persons use that address at the same PC or network. The block length depends on multiple factors and is usually extended with every block. If an IP continues to vandalize directly after a block expired, just give a 4im-warning and report to WP:AIV if they continue to vandalize after that warning. Regards --Oxymoron83 07:36, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

No problem, thank you for spotting that. Unfortunately the pre-reparation Sunda kingdom was an earlier cut&paste move of parts from Kingdoms of Sunda without attribution of the original authors, what can't be repaired. --Oxymoron83 10:39, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 71.122.226.103

Thanks for the block, but I think 31 hours is very light, this is a vandal that is back for at least the tenth time, he persistently removes correct information, removes active discussion, makes personal attacks and stalks other users undoing random edits. This user has been terrorizing me and others for months, no offense is meant, but I think 31 hours is not harsh enough.--The Dominator (talk) 00:11, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Yes I know, I've blocked him at least 5 times before (previously using IPs from the 71.99.0.0/16 range). Because he uses dynamic IPs, a longer block wouldn't make any sense and will only create collateral damage.
Update: As he's back with another IP just now, the 31 hour block was actually too long, 10 minutes would've been enough ... --Oxymoron83 00:17, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Well it's become a real annoyance to me over, the past month he started randomly undoing my edits 71.99 has been rangeblocked at one point, but he's back again.--The Dominator (talk) 00:21, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
And again: 71.99.112.140--The Dominator (talk) 00:26, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the semi-protect on Czechs but unfortunately he vandalizes a number of other articles, not to mention undoing edits at random.--The Dominator (talk) 00:29, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
and again 71.99.101.129, this could take all evening --The Dominator (talk) 00:32, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
The range is too big, there are probably too many good editors in between (71.122.192.0/18 = 16384 IPs plus 71.99.0.0/16 = 65536 IPs), so the only possibilities would be to fast-block every new IP he uses for a short time and hope he'll go away for now or to protect the pages. --Oxymoron83 00:36, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
He won't go away, he's been doing this for over a year.--The Dominator (talk) 00:38, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
That's the reason why the abuse report to the provider is the only long-term possibility to stop him. Unfortunately blocks and rangeblocks can only be made for a short time due to the range used. --Oxymoron83 01:43, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Has the report been filed? I remember one administrator telling me that the IP 71.99 is banned from the Czech wikipedia.--The Dominator (talk) 03:42, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
It's in the "new alerts" section, so it doesn't look like a report has been filed already. This guy seems not to be active at the Czech Wikipedia.--Oxymoron83 03:10, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
He's not active on the Czech Wikipedia anymore, but I've looked through this and his harrasing edits date back to early 2006, he has been doing pretty much the same thing there as here and has obtained a few blocks but seems to have transferred to EN wiki completely.--The Dominator (talk) 05:39, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] History of Indonesia

Dear Mr. Oxymoron83,

There is a missing history link in "The Portuguese" section. Portuguese did not explore directly to Maluku islands but tried firstly to explore Java island. To fill in this gap, I tried to add very important milestone of the Portuguese exploration in Java island. This history has been taught in Junior High School history curriculum in Indonesia. The milestone is as follow:

Portuguese started to get access to profiting spices trade by trying to form a coalition with Sunda Kingdom by accepting a crown prince of the kingdom invitation to make peace and trade treaty in 1512. In 1522 Portuguese tried to realize the treaty by firstly coming to Sunda Kalapa, the Sunda Kingdom’s port to sign a cooperation and erected a padrao there. [18] [19] Portuguese failed to realize this trade cooperation in the next years because 1452 troops from Cirebon – Demak alliance had forcefully conquered Sunda Kalapa in 1527. Portuguese went to the east, to Maluku, to have new access to pepper trade.

Best regards, --Hadiyana (talk) 13:57, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] History merge request

Hi. Good work on La Serena, Chile. There is a similar problem at Puerto Montt, Chile. User:Dincher did a cut&paste job from Puerto Montt to Puerto Montt, Chile on May 8, 2007. Here are the two diffs: [2] and [3]. I ask you to please merge both history pages and leave the page at Puerto Montt where it was originally before the cut&paste job. Thanks! ☆ CieloEstrellado 20:11, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Thank you very much! ☆ CieloEstrellado 22:55, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
Hello CieloEstrellado, I've merged the page to Puerto Montt, Chile for a reason. Please stop to make controversial page moves without finding consensus first. --Oxymoron83 23:00, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
Hi. It's not controversial. The , Chile suffix is only neccessary when disambiguation is needed, which is not the case here. There is no Chilean settlement guideline at this moment either. One is being discussed at Wikipedia talk:Chile-related regional notice board, though. Cheers. ☆ CieloEstrellado 23:21, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
You know exactly what I'm referring to. You participate in a page move war about the titles of Chilean settlement articles for 1 year. As there are a lot of editors who oppose (at a quick investigation I counted more that oppose than support your view), your move is definitely controversial. I personally think such suffixes are unnecessary. But moving a page without awaiting the outcome of ongoing discussions although you know that there are a lot of opposing editors, doing this repeatedly for the same as well for similar articles, nevertheless stating these moves are not controversial, and trying to force your desired outcome by asking other editors to do such moves for you is disruptive. That's why I preserved the status quo regarding the title. --Oxymoron83 23:55, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Blocking of 128.109.58.214

Hi! 20 days ago, you blocked this IP for 10 days. Now its vandalizing again. This IP has made ~80 edits since September 2007, all of them where intentional vandalism. It belongs to the "North Carolina Research and Education Network" and has been active for many months, so it can be assumed that this IP is a fixed IP address, not some DSL router. The IP has been warned many times. Could you please block it for longer, lets say several weeks/months? Thanks --Regani.de (talk) 16:55, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Blocked for 3 more weeks. The problem with such IPs is that they are often used by multiple users and different users are warned every time. As I found only 1 constructive edit that removed vandalism (but only to vandalize the page afterwards itself), a longer block seems to be necessary to protect Wikipedia in this case. --Oxymoron83 23:53, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Danke/Thanks! --Regani.de (talk) 08:32, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Masanao Takazawa

There was no blatant commercialism attached to the article, if so "show me" if not reinstate. The second submission was formated in the same manner as other karate masters currently listed on the website. Me thinks there may be ulterior motives for the continued harassment of this particular persons history.

This is a portion of the Funakoshi piece: Does it not promote commuercially Shotokan or the Japan Karate Association? Shorin-ryu? Shorei-ryu?

Funakoshi had trained in both of the popular styles of Okinawan karate of the time: Shōrei-ryū and Shōrin-ryū. His own style was influenced by kendo distancing and timing. Shotokan is named after Funakoshi's pen name, Shoto, which means "pine waves" or "wind in the pines". Shōtōkan means "Shoto's house" or "Shoto's school".

In 1936, Funakoshi built the first Shōtōkan dojo in Tokyo. He changed the name of karate to mean "empty hand" instead of "China hand" (as referred to in Okinawa); the two names sound the same in Japanese, but are written differently. Doing this upset some of his countrymen, and afterwards, Funakoshi never returned to Okinawa. This eventually led to the creation of the Japan Karate Association (JKA) in 1955 with Funakoshi as the chief instructor. Funakoshi was not supportive of all of the changes that the organization.

What is considered "blatant commercialism and what is not? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.17.0.226 (talkcontribs) 17:30, 19 Feb 2008

The page consisted solely of an external link. Not only it was an advertising, it also qualified as WP:CSD#A3. --Oxymoron83 23:33, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] You know, that was actually an interesting case...

With that Crazydude648 guy. You've blocked him indefinately, because all he ever did with his account was vandalize, and yet he had said he's leaving Wikipedia forever, anyway. I don't know if you agree, but I find that to be ironic! Wilhelmina Will (talk) 01:01, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

I wanted to ensure his promise comes true ;) But something tells me this wasn't the last account of this person ... --Oxymoron83 01:06, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Hmmm... that makes me look at it in a different light now... I've heard of vandalizing account users saying that they're going to leave, but then they come back as a sockpuppet or another account. They even return using just their IP. It was getting so you couldn't trust anybody months after Wikipedia started, and it seems to show no sign of improvement. But you could merely block that user's IP address from creating any more accounts, if the worst came to the worst, couldn't you? Wilhelmina Will (talk) 01:43, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
The autoblock disables editing and account creation from his IP for the next 24 hours. For those random vandalism-only accounts it isn't really important if they vandalized using another account before. If there is systematic disruption, only a checkuser can reveal the user's IP address to disable editing and account creation for a longer period. --Oxymoron83 01:59, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Blocking editing my userpage

I'm sorry, but I don't know all the stuff about wikipeida. Is the a way I can block the people from editing my page, because as you've seen I've been vandalized multiple times in the past week alone. So do I have to propose it to the admins or something, or is there a way I can just lock it? Thanks for the help. Juggalobrink (talk) 21:11, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Help me out?

Hey, I don't know much about wikipedia, but I had to revert an article that was vandalized by someone you delt with in January... you can find the info on the "Panic of 1837" page... I have no idea how to report this kind of thing, but I reverted the edit. The IP in question has already received multiple warnings... thanks for your help if you can do anything.

The IP in question is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/69.10.204.70

Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.249.182.19 (talk • contribs) 21:38, 21 Feb 2008

You can warn the user, e. g. using one of these templates. As this seems to be a static IP used only for vandalism, you don't have to start each time with a level1-warning. As this user received a level3 warning some hours before, in this situation you can give a "{{subst:uw-vandalism4}} --~~~~" warning, and if he continues to vandalize, report to WP:AIV (instructions there). Note that the " ~~~~", which you should place at the end of all your talk page contributions, will be replaced with your signature when pressing 'save'. --Oxymoron83 23:37, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm sure I'll figure out how to properly format things soon, I'm thinking of adding a few fungi articles once I get the chance. Maybe I should sign up and get a sweet username, haha!

[edit] The IP address that won't get an account

A lot of Wikipedia users want 68.39.174.238 to get an account, and this user is no exception.

What do you think? Basketball110 what famous people say 00:59, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

I've already voiced my opinion some time ago. What else can be done? Blocking the IP with ACB disabled? ;) --Oxymoron83 15:45, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

I personally believe that all IPs must be blocked from editing, and therefore forced to create an account. Wilhelmina Will (talk) 00:40, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Note that there are some users, including at least one very valuable contributor, that can't get accounts; they are not allowed to. In one case I know (something) of, the user is an inmate in a state prison in the US; they are not permitted to use any accounts for anything, so as to keep them from (e.g.) running e-mail scams etc. (Imagine a prisoner with a gmail account and a paypal account ...). Technically this is quite easy to do; the prison uses a proxy that won't submit forms with a "password" field. Robert Ullmann (talk) 13:22, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your insight. Of course every constructive edit is welcome, no matter if done as an IP or with an account. As the ;) indicates, this was only a joke, and we don't want to loose valuable contributors only because they don't want or can't create an account. --Oxymoron83 22:57, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "Qualifications Based Selection" article deletion

Hello.

I understand that at 09:02, 6 December 2007, you deleted "Qualifications Based Selection." Deletion information stated:‎ (Speedy deleted per (CSD R1), was a redirect to an non-existent page)

I was unaware of any non-existent pages references in my article. I wrote the article earlier in the year. It was a serious article and the only one on its subject in Wikipedia.

I had not updated the article in a while and was unaware of any problem.

Would you consider restoring the article? Please communicate with me by email to <email address> Thank you. Kimballp (talk) 02:58, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

I deleted the page as a redirect to the non-existent page "Qualifications-Based Selection", which was itself deleted by someone as copyright violation. --Oxymoron83 15:42, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion of Qualifications-Based Selection

I still don't understand. I created that article. It was largely based on personal experience and techniques that I helped develop personally as a government official. The article certainly was not copyrighted material, nor did it contain any. It was mainly about a technique used in government purchasing, so even the references would have been to ideas in the public domain. It had references and links, too.

What can I do? I don't spend much time working in Wikipedia. But I did spend a good bit of time working on that article and I want to have it restored. What should I have done to prevent what happened? I think the action might have been malicious, but I don't understand why anyone could possibly find offense at this article about a completely non-controversial subject.

I would certainly appreciate your help as someone familiar with Wikipedia.

Thank you. Kimballp (talk) 17:35, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Again, your article has been deleted as copyright violation from here. In case you have relations to that page, you should follow the instructions at Donating copyrighted materials. In case they stole your content, you better contact the deleting admin regarding the restoration, as I don't know if there was a request or other communication before (the article wasn't tagged itself); and the web page owner regarding the copyright violation. --Oxymoron83 23:39, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for reverting the obscene note on my talk page -- I actually did see it and, noting that the originator had had a full set of warnings, blocked him for a while. But your prompt and courteous act is much appreciated. Accounting4Taste:talk 23:22, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Blocked some ranges for a short time based on the IPs we know, this will make it a bit harder for him at least. --Oxymoron83 23:28, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Extended PP protection for a week, there is no need for you to have to put up with anon trolling. Undue whenever you like--Hu12 (talk) 00:10, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your attention. While a short protection is sometimes necessary due to vandalism from dynamic IPs or sock puppets, I think user talk pages should generally be open, especially as I often deal with new users and IPs who might have legitimate complaints and wouldn't have a chance to contact me. --Oxymoron83 00:51, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hamilton, Ontario

Good morning. First of all thanks for reverting the vandalism on today's "Featured Article": Hamilton, Ontario. Is there a way that we can put a lock on it? It appears the vandalism on the article has really jumped up since it became the Featured Article of the day. Thanks.  Nhl4hamilton | Chit-Chat  11:35, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Consensus is not to protect the TFA. There isn't that much vandalism for a TFA to justify protection at this time. --Oxymoron83 11:41, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "Colour Me Pop"

Hello, I don't understand why you deleted my article "Colour Me Pop" this morning. I don't understand what the "redirect based on an implausible typo" is that you gave as your reason for deletion. I would like the page to be restored as soon as possible, as I believe it is a very worthwhile and important article with regards to the history of music TV. Could you please explain and let me know how I can get the article back on wikipedia as soon as possible. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ajsmith999 (talkcontribs) 19:46, 29 Feb 2008

As Onorem said, your article was moved to Colour Me Pop by someone, because quotation marks normally aren't used in the page title. It would be hard to find your page otherwise if someone searches for Colour Me Pop. --Oxymoron83 22:39, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Query on rejected change? I made no such change

I received a message from you as follows:

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to make constructive contributions to Wikipedia, at least one of your recent edits, such as the one you made to World record, did not appear to be constructive and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Oxymoron83 01:26, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

This refers to the article at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_record

I don't recall making any such changes to this article. Is there a place where I can view this supposed change?

Additionally, I will look into changing my password to something stronger as the only change I've made to any article that I can remember was in regards to the stone onyx.

Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zephris (talk • contribs) 14:01, 6 Mar 2008

Hello Zephris, I didn't warn you, your talk page is empty. You received that message which I sent months ago to someone who got assigned your dynamic IP at that time when you were logged out. No one except you has edited from your account. --Oxymoron83 20:45, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

k Thx

[edit] Zelda Template

Hello, you helped me a while back regarding a page about Bob Dylan called "I'm Not There". I need help or advice since you seem to be an administor..

There several nav. templates for the video game series "The Legend of Zelda". The main one is template:Zelda games. There's a lot of edit history and talk history on that page. There is also a template for the series itself template:Zelda. There is also another one called Template:Zelda characters

A person going by the name Guest9999 created a brand new template simply called template:The Legend of Zelda. I don't have a problem with that, but this person completely ignored the existing templates and created a brand new template. Shouldn't the old edit history and talk histories be perserved, as largely it coves the same material covered on the original Zelda games template? Also, person didn't propose any changes on talk pages, he just did it and replaced the templates with his own. I don't have a problem with the template itself -- but the talk and edit should be perserved, and the guy should get a consensus to see what other people think since it's linked to so many other pages. Thanks Berenlazarus (talk) 02:24, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

The pages have already been merged and discussion takes place at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject The Legend of Zelda series#Navigational Templates, I think this is resolved. --Oxymoron83 01:01, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] User:Mr Niebla

I am wondering are you in any way affiliated with User:Mr Niebla? His user page seems to have been copied from yours (without editing out your user name). This use has been vandalizing other people's pages and I think it is in your best interest to remove your name from his/her page.--Cahk (talk) 09:49, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for spotting that and notifying me. I've left him a message and removed the links to my pages. If he continues in the same way, his userpage will be replaced with another template anyway ... --Oxymoron83 15:52, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks #4

Thank you for reverting the vandalism to my user page. That editor has been harrassing me on and off ever since an argument we had four months ago. It's kind of sad he even still remembers me.  Paul  730 19:12, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

How do you set up your user page like that? With fancy things and all that awards? Also, how do you get people to recognise you for your help, like reverting vandalism? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nathan.tang (talkcontribs) 01:01, 29 Mar 2008

I use wikisyntax, esp. tables and some user boxes; and try to make some good edits. --Oxymoron83 01:19, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

What is wikisyntax and where can I get it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nathan.tang (talkcontribs) 23:22, 29 Mar 2008

You can have a look at this page. If you need help on a special problem, please let me know; but please also bear in mind that Wikipedia is about writing an encyclopedia and not about setting up a good userpage ;) --Oxymoron83 07:42, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] ElgooG

Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article ElgooG, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Yes I think so, but I tend to watch such users a bit to see if their edits qualify them for an ACB enabled block. --Oxymoron83 20:23, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Ok, I'll let you deal with this one then! Mjroots (talk) 08:20, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Oh I understand now. Perhaps I will let it rest. That would be probably be for the best.

Its embarrassing that it was perceived as such as my plan was to deepen it considerably. However, I take the hint, as well as my leave. Thank you for your fair approach which has left upon me a highly favorable impression:0)
