[edit] Background
Oxjam originated in Northern Ireland and was the brainchild of Belfast born musician Maurice Macartney who organised the first gig at the Belfast venue 'Auntie Annie's' during the Fairtrade Fortnight of 2004. The line up included bands and singer songwriters such as Cal, Talking Drum and Foy Vance. Though small in scale, the gig was a success and the concept spread further afield, leading to another much larger festival during October 2006. The project was to raise money for Oxfam. The slogan for the festival was simple: make music~ raise money~ change lives.
Events took place throughout the UK and a large number of bands took part in the festivals. Supporting bands include Hot Chip, Kaiser Chiefs, Goldfrapp and Franz Ferdinand.
Last year, around £500,000 was raised through the Oxjam campaign. This means that the event will be running for the next 10 years hoping to raise an overall £10 million.
[edit] Oxjam 2007
Oxjam took place for a successful third festival during 2007. Events took place throughout the country. It is expected that the amount raised should exceed £1 million.
[edit] Oxjam Cardiff Chill 2007
Oxjam Cardiff Chill took place for another festival as well. This time the venues were a little out of town including The Gate Arts Centre in Roath, Cardiff and Chapter Arts Centre in Canton.
The main event was made up of a number of young bands showcasing new music (a theme which is hoped to progress into the future). A smaller, acoustic event then took place in which a few local bands played several short sets.
Almost £400 was raised from Oxjam Cardiff Chill 2007.
In 2007, the Oxjam Cardiff Swap also took place for the first time. The swap started back in June 2007 with a small "Oxjam" badge which was then swapped for a CD. This in turn was exchanged for an "aloe vera plant which was finally swapped for a bamboo chair and table set. The swap is set to continue into 2008.
[edit] Oxjam Cardiff Chill 2008
Plans are currently underway to make Oxjam Cardiff Chill 2008 even bigger and better than before. Currently new composers and music is being sourced within the South Wales area which could possibly premier at the event in October.
The Oxjam Cardiff Swap 2008 is set to return later in January 2008.
Further advances and new elements for Oxjam Cardiff Chill 2008 will also be added.
