Talk:Oxford University Wine Society
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
To justify not deleting: this is a famous wine society, referred to in Jancis Robinson's autobiography and well known and regarded within the international wine trade. It has produced several famous wine writers. It will link to the Wikipedia page on the Varsity blind tasting match, which is the world's oldest competitive wine tasting. The Oxford Union has a wiki page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_Union) as do several other famous Oxford Societies:

...some of which are of much more recent creation than OUWS and dubious merit.
- The fact that other socs have pages on here is not relevant WP:WAX - it may well be that the other pages should be deleted. The Union is a notable organisation and its debates regularly feature in national and even international broadcast and published media. However, I really do not believe that a mention in Jancis Robinson's autobiography (not cited in the article, I note) endows notability. BlinkingBlimey (talk) 17:09, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
- Jancis Robinson is now referenced in the article, but even so - it doesn't meet WP:N - specifically it has not received significant coverage from independent sources. BlinkingBlimey (talk) 17:41, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. Wikipedia is a new forray for me, so please excuse it if I don't get it right first time. Am keen to develop this into a more useful page that reflects the standing of the Society within the international wine trade. Any suggestions for how else we can do this would be very warmly recieved. You have obviously far more Wikipedia experience than us and we would respect your comments!
PS. Its not so much a mention in her autobiography, more of a whole chapter devoted to her time at Oxford. I didn't have the book to hand to include it, but the ref is now inserted.
- If you can prove some standing within the international wine trade that may justify notability, but you need some independent sources, most of the current references are internal to the University. On a separate point, when you make comments on talk pages (either for articles or other users) you should add your signature. You can do that automatically by typing four tildas - ~~~~, which WP automatically expands thus BlinkingBlimey (talk) 17:41, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] removal of speedy
I have removed the speedy tag. While WP:WAX is not a reason to keep, it is also a reason not to speedy. Speeding it meant for an article who's notably is not the least bit in doubt - which is not the case here. This does not mean that this article can survive a deletion debate, which is still possible. - My reference to WP:WAX was that the existence of other OU Soc articles is not a justification of this one. My main concern is that this is just not notable and does not demonstrate (to me at least) how it can develop into a notable article. BlinkingBlimey (talk) 00:08, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
