Oxford Student Publications Ltd or OSPL, is an independent student publishing house in Oxford that publishes the Cherwell student newspaper and the ISIS student magazine.
Wholly independent and run entirely by students of the University of Oxford, OSPL was incorporated in 1961, when it was established as a holding company for Cherwell newspaper. OSPL acquired the ISIS brand in the late 1990s. OSPL is a private company limited by guarantee and registered at Companies House.
OSPL does not remunerate any of its directors or 'employees' (almost all of whom work on a volunteer basis), whether business or editorial. Its key revenue stream is from advertising, and the company is receives no subsidy from Oxford University. All profits are ploughed back into media production and into ensuring the long-term wellbeing of the company.
Very few major student newspapers operate in this fashion and the continued success and financial viability of OSPL pays testament to its ability to attract the most capable Oxford students as journalists and managers.
