[edit] Newbold Road - Sheepbridge Sports and Social Club
In 2006 the cricket pavillion suffered a suspected arson attack, doing damage estimated at £1,500. Further damage was caused by smoke and water, when the fire was extinguished. A major fund raising effort was undertaken and the club house was back in working order for the start of the the 2006 season.[8]
In late 2007, GKN announced it would be closing Sheepbridge Sports and Social Club and selling the 10 acre site.[9] This mean that Sheepbridge CC needed to secure a new ground for the 2008 season. A deal was struck with Tibshelf Parish Council for Sheepbridge CC to rent the gound.[10][11] The ground was left vacent after Tibshelf CC, a team whoes origins date back to the 1890's, folded at the end of the 2007 season.[12]
In April 2008 the cricket pavillion suffered a further suspected arson attack. This time the damage was far more serious, nearly burning the entire structure to the ground.
The Future of the Sheepbridge Sports and Social Club remains uncertain. A local residents group named Friends of Sheepbridge Fields has been established to lobby for the site to remain a green open space which the local residents can enjoy. As part of their activites, they have carried out litter picks to improve the area.[13] Also linked with the site are Chesterfield FC, who have expressed and interest in taking over the site to use as training facilities.
