From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some articles, particularly Reforms of Russian orthography have sections of italicised Cyrillic text that is quite difficult to read.

I proposed (in the MoS Talk: page) that a Style point should be developed on the subject. It was suggested that the "proper" transliteration of Cyrillic should be included in the same point, with a pointer to de:Kyrillisches Alphabet.

As such, this is my work in progress.

When transliterating Cyrillic words, the Cyrillic should not be italicised, but the Roman alphabet transliteration should be. Ideally, a translation into English should follow.

The regular consonants are relatively simple to transliterate, but as a style preference, Wikipedia prefers Cyrillic characters to be transliterated thusly; where there are two mentioned, the first is preferred. When a specific romanisation is more generally known, it should be used in preference (such as Khrushchev for Хрущёв, which would otherwise be Khruščyov).

[edit] Notes

  1. In the Ukrainian language, Ge (Г г) should be transliterated as H or h; otherwise it should be transliterated G or g.
  2. In the Bulgarian language, Yer (the Russian hard sign: Ъ ъ) should be transliterated as a schwa: Ə ə Ə ə; otherwise it should be transliterated with a double-quote symbol, if at all.
