His professional career began in 1999 when he signed for FC National Bucharest.

Ovidiu Petre made his first appearance in the Divizia A in 2000, when he was only 18 years old, while he was playing for FC National in a match against Rapid Bucuresti. FC National lost that match with 2-3, but discovered a fabulous player, Ovidiu Petre.

The first 2 seasons spent at FC National didn’t brought him many professional successes, he played 10 games in 2 seasons. In 2001-2002 FC National was so close to win the internal competition. Ovidiu Petre improved his performances and became an essential player for his team.

In the European Cups, Ovidiu Petre played in the UEFA Cup with FC National Bucharest in 6 matches.

[edit] Galatasaray (2003-05)

In 2003 he was transferred to Galatasaray Istanbul. The Turkish team paid 1 million € for Petre, a generous sum for a soccer player from Romania.

His first game in Turkcell Super League was on the 13th of September 2003 against Konyaspor Kulübü and his team lost with 0-1.

He played 4 matches with Galatasaray Istanbul in the season 2003-2004 in Uefa Champions League.

After a season and a half spent at Galatasaray, Petre didn't confirm his skills and he was transferred at the middle of the season 2004-2005 to FCU Politehnica Timisoara.

[edit] Poli Timisoara (2005-06)

After 3 seasons spent at Poli Timisoara, the coach that properly launched Ovidiu Petre's career, Cosmin Olaroiu, left Poli and signed a contract with Steaua Bucuresti. Petre proved he’s not mature yet and he made public his intentions to cancel his contract with Poli in order to play for the new team of his favourite coach.

After many negotiations Petre got his transfer to Steaua in the season 2006-2007.

[edit] Steaua Bucuresti (2006-present)

In August 2006, however, he is signed by Steaua Bucureşti, where Petre joins Cosmin Olăroiu once again.

He made his debut for Steaua on the 9th September, 2006 in the victory against FC Arges with 1-0. He scored his first goal for Steaua against his former team, Poli Timisoara, in the victory with 3-1.

In the 2007-08 season he scored two consecutive goals, one with Pandurii Targu-Jiu, game ending with 1-0 and the other one in the derby with CFR Cluj, which Steaua won with 3-1. After that game the championship title was still a hope for Steaua, getting behind with 9 points of the leader, CFR Cluj.

His first goal in the Uefa Champions League was against FC Sevilla, even though he scored Steaua lost the match with 1-2 and finishing on the last place in the group with only 1 point.
