Ovid Technologies

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ovid Technologies, Inc. (or just Ovid for short), part of the Wolters Kluwer group of companies, provides access to online bibliographic databases, journals and other products, chiefly in the area of health sciences. The National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE database was once its chief product but now that this is freely available through PubMed, Ovid has diversified into a wide range of other databases and other products. Ovid has its global headquarters in New York City.[1]

Ovid was founded by Mark Nelson who developed his first interface to MEDLINE in 1984.[2] He formed the company in New York in 1988[2] and called it Online Research Systems.[3][4] The company's first Microsoft Windows interface to MEDLINE was named Ovid and released in 1992.[2] In 1994 the company changed its name to CD Plus,[4] took over BRS Online[2][3] and shortly after listed on NASDAQ.[2] It then changed to its present name in 1995, reflecting the importance of its Ovid product.[2] Wolters Kluwer took the company over in 1998. In 2001 Wolters Kluwer purchased the rival SilverPlatter company and merged it into Ovid during 2001 and early 2002.[5]

Ovid introduced a new database search interface called OvidSP in 2007. This has replaced the Ovid Gateway interface, which was retired in February 2008, and will replace the SilverPlatter interface which will be retired in January 2009.
