Overseas School of Colombo

The Overseas School of Colombo is a multinational English medium international school located in Pelawatte near Battaramulla, a suburb of Colombo, Sri Lanka. The school is an International Baccalaureate World School offering IB programs from preschool through to twelfth grade and is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

The school was established in 1957 as a non-profit organization under Sri Lankan law. The founders were from diplomatic missions (British High Commission, Burmese High Commission and Dutch Embassy) and the business community which reflects the school population today. As the school developed it became recognized as an Office of Overseas sponsored school and has built close ties with the US Embassy while maintaining links with the other diplomatic missions.

OSC moved to its purpose built campus in the early 1980s after the original campus was burned down during civil unrest. The campus has developed since, and now features a sports field, sports hall (currently being redesigned), science labs, technology suites (featuring Smartboards), libraries (primary and secondary), a 25 meter swimming pool and an auditorium with experimental black box studio and a reception hall.

OSC houses a powerhouse of multicultural and intellectual students. While the majority of the OSC population is a consistent mix of east-asian and western students, the school also allows for a scholarship programme that allows Sri Lankan citizens to enroll in the school. Being an international school, OSC celebrates major international occasions such as the International Children's Book Day and UN Day (in which students are allowed to dress up in their national costumes and parents sell their national dishes from which the proceeds go to other non-profit organizations). After-school activities are a must at OSC such as helping at the local pre-school, helping kastrate dogs, or even the Reach-Out-Programme (helping after the tsunami).
