Overhalla is a municipality in the county of Nord-Trøndelag, Norway.
Overhalla was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The town of Namsos was separated from Overhalla 1855. The municipality of Sævik was merged with Overhalla January 1, 1846 - but again separated as a municipality of its own in 1860 (see Namsos herred). The population is concentrated in the relatively broad valley with the river Namsen at the center. Public service and agriculture are the main ways of income. Overhallahus (house building company) is located in the municipality. Overhalla is the home of international women's footballer Gunhild Følstad (b. 1981).
[edit] Name
The Old Norse form of the name was œfri halfa 'the upper half (of Namdalen)'. (The district Namdalen was divided in two parts: 'the upper half' and 'the lower half' - the municipality of Overhalla today is, however, just a fraction of the old part œfri halfa.)
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from 1989, but is inspired by an old seal for the district from 1344. It shows seven red greek crosses.
