Wikipedia talk:Outline of Roget's Thesaurus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Why this is here:
Somebody got the brilliant idea to import the outline from Roget's, as an indexing tool/classification system. Once all the words were linkified, most of them became active! This outline is in use on Wiktionary for the same purpose: to classify its definitions. So why keep it here? Because, if you are familiar with the classification scheme of Roget's Outline, it provides yet another useful way to look up Wikipedia articles. It is also an excellent vocabulary builder with definitions of encyclopedic scope just a click away. And because the vast majority of the links are live, it meets Wikipedia's inclusion requirements. Go for it! 14:38, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Archive 2003
This page strikes me as somewhat huge and useless, in addition to being a source text rather than an encyclopedia article. Now that there's a Sourceberg, maybe it should just be moved over there? Bryan 08:28, 25 Nov 2003 (UTC)
- It's certainly huge, particularly with all those blank lines, but, I would argue, not entirely useless. With enough Wiki links, it could serve as an alternative classification scheme for Wikipedia. That way it would become a true Wikipedia text and not just a dump of some old source. I volunteer to do the linking (but not all today). -- Heron

- Works for me, and I'll do some cleanup work on it too when I've got time. I merely dislike it in its current form. Bryan 16:11, 25 Nov 2003 (UTC)

- If you want it to be a classification scheme for Wikipedia, maybe it would be best in the Wikipedia namespace. It isn't really an encyclopedia article, but it think it would be useful for those browsing Wikipedia. Any objections to moving to Wikipedia:Outline of Roget's Thesaurus or would another title be better? Angela 22:40, 25 Nov 2003 (UTC)

- I would not oppose moving it to the Wikipedia namespace. Heron, I gave it a shot with some regexping to add the links, but I am not all that good at this so there are mistakes, and some things missing, but it might save you some time, nonetheless. See Talk:Outline of Roget's Thesaurus/temp. If it is decided to move this page into the Wikipedia namespace and you decide to use the modification I made, let me know so I can delete the temp file. - Whoops, didn't see your comment here and associated /temp page before I did work on the main. How easy was it to do that link-adding regexp? It was fairly easy running the article through the capitalization function I used, the work was all in fixing the roman numerals afterward, so I'll do it again if the /temp version gets used. In the meantime, I'm adding a note to the main article to avoid more duplication of effort. Bryan 07:21, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)

- How about this one without all CAPS: Talk:Outline of Roget's Thesaurus/temp2. The thing is now III will appear as Iii :) Dori 07:33, Nov 26, 2003 (UTC)

Dori's Talk:Outline of Roget's Thesaurus/temp2 looks OK. I vote we keep that version, and manually fix the Roman numerals (an easy job). I don't object if we move it to Wikipedia:Outline of Roget's Thesaurus, as long as it gets linked to the main wikipedia somehow. I can understand the objections about it being not quite an encyclopedia article, so this seems a good compromise. -- Heron 12:51, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)
- OK, I moved the page, fixed some links, resolved the issue at VfD, replaced the page with temp2, and deleted the temp and temp2 pages. Dori 15:36, Nov 26, 2003 (UTC)
