[edit] Re:Future Leaders

Some thoughts - first off, that page was an enormous copyright violation when I found it, which I removed. Then, I added back in information about FLOW, because the page said essentially nothing about them. Since Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, rather than a news source, I thought it was important to include as much historical information about FLOW as I could find. You're welcome to add new information about Machina if you'd like. Chubbles (talk) 06:50, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] GA on hold

Your article United States Special Operations Command has been put on hold for its good article nomination. See the article's talk page for details, and reply to all messages there. If the article does not meet the requirements set forth on the talk page by March 15th, I have no choice but to fail the nomination. It can, of course, be renominated at a later date. Codharris (talk) 23:40, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Special reconnaissance article

With your edit today, is the point that Force Recon will stay with the FMF, while other components go to MARSOC? I wasn't sure if that was the point of your deletion of Force Recon. For that matter, will there be any difference betwee Force Recoon battalions and independent companies?

Remember, SR is a mission, and both Force Recon within Corps units, as well as MARSOC (and non-Marine SOC units) can perform it. Howard C. Berkowitz (talk) 16:18, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

I'm not sure if they all have gone to MARSOC, but I'd have to research it. For example, my understanding is that a FR team is usually attached to a MEU. Would that now come from MARSOC?
There was a good deal of complaining, at the time of this proposal, that the Marines would lose necessary organic capability. The Army true SR units are in SOCOM, but there are intermediate-level recon units that do stay -- even the brigade combat teams have much more recon than the former brigades and even divisions. Howard C. Berkowitz (talk) 16:26, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

I will look into it also. If you go to the MARSOC website they have all they're units listed, and it doesn't list any FR groups, thats why I don't think FR is still operational. I know that there are still Marine Recon Battalions are operational but not under MARSOC or SOCOM. I think they receive most of the missions that Force Recon usually would have taken for the regular Marine Corps.Outdawg (talk) 16:37, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hey congrats

Great work on the Strategic Support Branch and the USSOCOM articles. Do you believe the SSB is a reincarnation of the Intelligence Support Activity? - seems to be doing much the same thing. I was looking at the SOCOM article with a view to doing a GA nomination, but have no experience of them, so I thought I'd just leave a couple of notes:

  • the history jumps straight from 1987 to post September 11: you could easily, for example, put a note in about Schwarzkopf & ODS, and his reported views on SF, Just Cause, and Operation Gothic Serpent.
  • the unit descriptions are a bit US-official-website heavy. There are so so so many books out on special forces, some of which are good. You could bring some of that material in.
  • If you wish to move this process on a bit faster, you could run it through a MILHIST peer review, and then A-class, as an alternative.

Best regards from Down Under.. Buckshot06 (talk) 08:56, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

All of that sounds good. Thanks for the advice. Outdawg (talk) 15:12, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] News! Tag & Assess 2008 is coming ...

Milhist's new drive – Tag & Assess 2008 – goes live on April 25 and you are cordially invited to participate. This time, the task is housekeeping. As ever, there are awards galore, plus there's a bit of friendly competition built-in, with a race for bronze, silver and gold wikis! You can sign up, in advance, here. I look forward to seeing you on the drive page! All the best, --ROGER DAVIES talk 13:05, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Please slow down on the US SOF page

You have omitted important details and pared it down to a list that is incomplete. Please discuss on talk page. — BQZip01 — talk 02:47, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

For starters, you have omitted the description. Second, please realize this is not limited to SOCOM assets, but a broader range of topics. No one is questioning your motives, but you have pared it down so much that it has become a list and not an article. That said, perhaps a list article would be useful? — BQZip01 — talk 03:01, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

You are right. The edits did make it more of a list than an article but much of the content that I removed are not U.S. SOF because they do not conduct special operations. I'm not going to go back and make the same edits but I am going to change certain parts of that article. Outdawg (talk) 03:09, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter
Issue XXVII (May 2008)
Project news
  • Editors needed for Tag & Assess 2008. To coincide with the summer holidays, it will be gearing up from 15 June. As usual, barnstars galore!
  • Partner peer reviews: for a thirty-day trial period, we'll be running joint peer reviews with Wikiproject Video Games. The idea is simple: we help with their reviews; they help with ours. This way both wikiprojects benefit from new reviewers and new ideas!
  • We're notable: A new book, Simon Fowler's 2007 Guide to Military History on the Internet (UK:Pen & Sword, ISBN 9781844156061) rates Wikipedia as "the best general resource" for military research (p. 7). Of the military pages, he says: "The results are largely accurate and generally free of bias" (he also suggests people join the wikiproject). When rating WP as the No. 1 military site (p. 201) he says "Wikipedia is often criticised for its inaccuracy and bias, but in my experience the military history articles are spot on."
  • A-Class reviews: the usual four-day review period may now be extended by up to three days (ie seven days in total) in the following circumstances:
  1. the article has no opposes but has insufficient support for promotion or
  2. the article's nominator requests more time to resolve matters arising during the review.

[edit] Naval Special Warfare Center

Just wanted to explain why I added the La Posta facility where I did in the article. La Posta is not a subsidiary training site, but actually part of the Coronado command.--mrg3105 (comms) ♠♣ 05:43, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
