[edit] Overview
[edit] Background
All of the Warriors novels are listed as being written by Erin Hunter. Erin Hunter is a pen name for three people, Victoria Holmes, who creates the storylines and edits, Kate Cary, and Cherith Baldry, who write the books in turns.[3][11] Outcast is part of the Warriors: Power of Three series, which is the third six-book series under the Warriors title.[12]
[edit] Setting
The Warriors series follows four Clans - ThunderClan, RiverClan, WindClan, and ShadowClan - of feral cats.[13] Jaypaw, Hollypaw and Lionpaw are apprentices in ThunderClan. The Clans believe in warrior ancestors called StarClan.[4] In a previous series, the Tribe of Rushing Water was introduced. The Tribe, also a group of wild cats, inhabits mountains and believes in their own set of warrior ancestors, the Tribe of Endless Hunting.[14]
[edit] Plot summary
In Outcast, Hollypaw, Lionpaw, and Jaypaw resume their daily lives after the events of Dark River. Jaypaw becomes obsessed with learning about the cats who had lived by the lake before the Clans while Lionpaw continues training with Tigerstar and Hollypaw realizes she wants to become leader of her Clan one day. Each finds the aspect of traveling to the mountains intriguing, and when Talon of Swooping Eagle (Talon) and Night of No Stars (Night) from the Tribe of Rushing Water come to Thunderclan to ask Stormfur and Brook to come back, they get their chance at last.
A group of cats set out to the mountains (Crowfeather,Tawnypelt, Stormfur, Brook, etc.), where the Tribe was being terrorized by intruders. Stormfur and Brook originally came from the mountains, but were banished when too many cats died because of Stormfur's idea to fight the intruders as the Tribe cats were not well-versed in fighting. Once there, the group start teaching every Tribe cat how to fight like the Clan cats. The Tribe is reluctant to give up their traditions, but they manage to drive out the invaders, mostly thanks to Lionpaw. Meanwhile, Jaypaw continues to try to find out about the mysterious prophecy: "There will be three, kin of your kin, who hold the powers of the stars in their paws" from the ancient cats that refers to himself and his littermates. He learns that the Tribe originated from the lake and decides to tell his brother and sister about the prophecy at the end of Outcast.
[edit] Talents
- Lionpaw-Fighting, taught by Tigerstar and Hawkfrost
- Hollypaw-Hunting, said to be "almost as good as Sandstorm", also has strong leadership feelings and a nose for information
- Jaypaw- Walking into other cats' memories, dreams and feelings
[edit] Themes
Lionpaw receives a major reality check when he finds out that his strengths and attitude affect those around him. Hollypaw learns what it is like to be a mentor when she trains the to-bes and receives the virtues of compassion and patience. Jaypaw discovers more about the past and learns that he can't find his destiny; instead, his destiny finds him.
