Out of the Ashes is the name of an album by Outlaw country star Jessi Colter.

Released in May 2006 on the Shout! Factory label, "Out of the Ashes" was Colter's first studio album in over twenty years. In 2005, Colter demoed a few songs for good friend and legendary producer Don Was and the two decided to officially collaborate on what was to become a highly anticipated project. Colter wrote or co-wrote ten of the album's songs, some of which were characterized by strong roots and honky-tonk blues rhythms ("You Can Pick 'Em"; "Velvet & Steel") while others drew upon poetic, confessional strengths from Colter's classic heyday in the 70's ("Starman"; "The Canyon"; "Out of the Ashes"), when she was produced to such potent commercial and critical effect by Capitol Records great, Ken Mansfield . Interweaved with these strong originals are the Gospel-tinged impact of the standard, "His Eye Is On the Sparrow," and a delightfully ironic cover of Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women." Colter also collaborates to fine effect on the set, first alongside Tony Joe White and a "lost" vocal track of her late husband, Waylon Jennings , for the soaring hymn "Out of the Rain," Roy Herndon on "Never Got Over You," and son Shooter Jennings for the original "Please Carry Me Home," which was also featured on the album, [[Songs Inspired By The Passion of the Christ]] . The overall tone of the record was one of renewal tempered by remembrance, as well as a sensual celebration of life juxtaposed against tribulation. Love, loss, grief, and wisdom hard-earned were motifs handled with flair by Colter's amazingly well-preserved voice and a stellar studio team of musicians. Under the wisely spare production of Was, Colter brought her pure tones and plaintive, emotional gifts as singer-songwriter into a new millennium, and critics were swift to take note. The album garnered rave reviews from People Magazine to All Music Guide and a wealth of other industry sources. A flurry of press & publicity events heralded the comeback release and "Out of the Ashes" charted on Billboard's "Top Country Albums" chart the week immediately following its release--almost thirty years after her previously charting Capitol solo album in 1978. A brief tour (including a stop at the Viper Room in Los Angeles) followed, along with heavy-rotation on alternative country radio and NPR stations. The "First Lady" of "outlaw country" had returned in style.
