Talk:Oulton Broad

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Personally I think this is one persons article bigging the china garden up. The food round oulton broad is geneally all fast food/kebab houses aswell as chinese cuisine. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.154.22.37 (talkcontribs) 04:27, 2 March 2006

[edit] Inaccurate

Have lived here for 18 years and never heard of there being a brothel. This article is very negative and Biased of a nice area

Well you obviously haven't had a need for a brothel then have you? Nothing negative about it, except for the George Borrow.

[edit] Fastest Lap query...

The fact re: the fastest lap on Oulton Broad (stated as being set in 1987) is definately inaccurate as Tom Percival, my Uncle, died in 1984.

[edit] Major cleanup

I've cut out most of the POV-bits, and just generally tidied this article up. I still think it could do with some work though - I'll do some more when I have the time. CPCHEM 14:34, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

  • This cleanup has turned the entry from being an interesting read about OB, which may have provoked community driven editing for people to add their side and to properly label gossip and conjecture, into just another dull entry you find on other sites without the ideals and features of Wikipedia. Boo
  • I agree, this was one of the best entries I've read on Wikipedia. From working in Oulton Broad and knowing people who have lived here all their lives, this entry was pretty much accurate, and certainly more interesting than the dry factual article it's been replaced with. What is wrong with putting a bit of personal feeling into an article? Clearly the original author knew the area well. Boo times two.

[edit] revert it then...

surely if you don;t like the way the page is now, you could just revert it to the previous version...

Yo homise, It's me, Gilbey. I wrote the original article and I think it's a shame that some boring sod has gone and whipped out all the bits that might actually have one day proved useful.

Thanks to the person who said that they enjoyed my entry. To clarify a few things, everything was based on fact and my own personal experience of Oulton Broad where I lived for seventeen years and where my real name is carved into the bench at the north train station (my own little piece of lowestoft history). Oulton Broad and Oulton Village are in fact a conurbation of what were originally two separate villages. Sands Lane marks the boundary of the two villages and everything to the north is the village, everything to the south is the broad. Further, The George Borrow is a dreadful pub, this is not a matter of conjecture or opinion. Anyone who has ever been there would agree with me and if you think otherwise then you obviously never have been there. As to the mindless philestine who believes that "This article read like a poorly written travel guide. It should read like an encyclopedic article" may I first point out that encyclopaedia has an a in it (if you are going to come over all picky on me and I know my spelling is probably off tonight as well but I've been drinking and you started all this pedantry!) It's just terrific that some people think that it is necessary for an encyclopeodia to be very dull.

May I point my detractors towards a book called "Ulysses" by a certain James Joyce. It reads like a bad travel guide and never did the Dublin tourist trade any harm. It certainly works better to get people interested than telling them that Dublin's a popular night-time destination, with popular pubs. (not that I'm comparing myself to James Joyce, but I am probably more like him than whoever deleted all my hard work)

Surely if this is the level you have sunk to, in deleting a veritable masterpiece of local knowledge, may you burn in information hell.

Love Gilbey.

[edit] Trying to please everybody

I have added some more content and split it into sections. I have not deleated anyone elses text, but have moved small parts of it to other sections.

Personally I think its a suburb of Lowestoft, but as someone else refers to it as a village (perhaps for prestige etc), I have included that view also.

So I've tried to please everybody.

I will probably do some more work on it later on.

How about someone adding one or two photos? Eg of the lake. If someone want to add some photos of the park, then the park could be made into a seperate article.

Cheers!

[edit] Youve got to admit its a suburb

If OB was a village it would:

  • be surrounded by fields
  • have a village green at the centre (not a park)
  • not be very big
  • not have much traffic
  • be quiet and peaceful
  • have at least one or two olde worlde cottages, possibly thatched
  • have houses with nice gardens
  • only have one or at the most two pubs

OB hasnt got any of the above characteristics, therefore it is not a village.

The only reason to claim its a village is for prestige or snob value, or to differentiate it from the lake.

Sorry.

^^^ To clarify the previous poster's, unsigned, comment: Oulton Broad is not a seperate parish (It's parish name is Lowestoft). Oulton Broad is currently a Ward of Lowestoft: http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2001/20013889.htm Don't confuse it with Oulton Village: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oulton

Oulton Broad used to be a village, but as Lowestoft grew it was encompassed by it, which is probably why some people persist in calling it a village. Yes, I'm a resident. Yes, I have lots of photos. I'll see what I can dig up (And may even actually sign up for a wiki account!) 82.27.21.102 01:00, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Travel article

This article read like a poorly written travel guide. It should read like an encyclopedic article, and I've started some basic copy edits to that effect. Please bear this in mind on future edits. Rklawton 21:42, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm disappointed the local characters section has been removed. This once-entertaining article has had it's life sanitised once again....

"Oulton Broad is a popular night-time destination, with popular pubs."

I mean, come on!

I am also disapointed that this big section has been removed. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 62.253.48.124 (talk) 18:00, 4 January 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Edits

I live in Oulton Broad. Oulton Broad is definitely a suburb and i have amended the article accordingly. It is not a village any more than Pakefield is.

Do you have any good photographs you could add to the article? Rklawton 16:35, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] More stuff about the park

Nicholas Everitt Park is quite an elaborate design and has various features including a Museaum. It would be nice to know more about its history and whats in it.

[edit] Trimming away advertorial content

Much of this article read like an advertisment... an encyclopedia with global coverage does not need detail on which fish and chips place has the best drink offers on Friday nights. So I have again removed that information. Please, if you choose to edit, use appropriate sourced information and keep a neutral tone. Thank you. Epousesquecido 15:46, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I agree. If anons keep adding advertorial material, this article may need to be semi protected. We do not need paragraphs about underage drinking allegations, for example, as that is not notable. Addded material must be notable, verifiable, and neutral. ++Lar: t/c 23:15, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Oulton is not the same as Oulton Broad

I clicked on Oulton and got redirected here - but Oulton and Oulton Broad are different places. Oulton was a village now absorbed into Lowestoft, and is about 6km away north from Oulton Broad. So can there be a seperate article about Oulton please? I seem to remember reading one about Oulton village - perhaps it is still hidden away somewhere. 80.0.107.16 (talk) 12:41, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
