The next Ottawa municipal election will be held on November 8, 2010. It will be held to elect the mayor of Ottawa, Ottawa City Council and the Ottawa-Carleton Public and Catholic School Boards. The election will be held on the same date as every other municipality in Ontario.
The 2006 municipal election elected Larry O'Brien as mayor of Ottawa, when he defeated former city councillor Alex Munter and incumbent mayor Bob Chiarelli. Since then, O'Brien has been the subject of a number of controversies. A Leger Marketing poll published by the Ottawa Sun on May 26, 2007 put O'Brien's approval ratings at 24%, and stated that if an election were held today, both he and Munter would be tied with 35% of the vote. [1] However, Munter has indicated he has no intentions of running again.
If mayor O'Brien is charged for his bribery allegations, then a by-election for mayor may occur in the mean time.
