"Other Side" is a song by Pearl Jam. It first appeared as a B-side on the "Save You" single. It can also be found as a B-side on the "Love Boat Captain" single. "Other Side" later appeared on the 2003 B-sides and rarities compilation Lost Dogs. The song has never been performed live.
[edit] Origin and recording
It was written by bassist Jeff Ament. It was recorded during the sessions for Pearl Jam's seventh album, Riot Act. Ament said he pushed for the song to make the album, adding that "it means a lot to me and I really fell in love with how spooky and weird the demo sounded."[1]
[edit] Lyrical meaning
Jeff Ament discussed the song in the liner notes for Lost Dogs. He stated:
This one started off being for my mom and dad. They've been married for 42 years and they've been my biggest inspiration. Over the couple of years that I wrote and reworked it, it turned into me and P. Partnerships are hard, lifelong ones are just absolutely mind blowing.[1]
Eddie Vedder complemented these liner notes, stating:
If life is a cruise ship and death is to disembark to another shore, then this song is what it's like to be on land while your partner remains out at sea.[1]
