Other BDO tournaments
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British Darts Organisation organize hundreds of darts tournaments each year. In addition to their major titles, known as the BDO Grand Slam (Lakeside World Professional Championship, Topic International Darts League, Bavaria World Darts Trophy, Winmau World Masters) they also stage many Open events around Britain and Europe - with the World Darts Federation also staging events across the rest of the world.

[edit] British Open
The British Open is one of the longest-running darts events, having started just a few months after the first ever Winmau World Masters. The tournament used to be televised by the BBC from its inception, but it ceased to cover the event after 1983. It was often held between Christmas and New Year - the 1975 Championship was actually played in late 1974. The tradition was maintained until near the millennium, when the organisers moved the tournament back to September/October.

[edit] Dutch Open
The Dutch Open is amongst the longest running darts tournaments having started back in 1973. The popularity of darts in the Netherlands since Raymond van Barneveld began amassing world titles has seen the number of entries for the tournament rise dramatically. The 2007 event had 2867 entries in the Men’s Singles, 1179 in the Men’s Pairs, 418 in the Women’s Singles and 176 in the Women’s Pairs. Although the tournament is classed an "Open" event, only players eligible to for the Winmau World Masters and BDO World Championship are now allowed to enter. This had ruled out PDC players from competing since 2006. [1]
The tournament has been covered by Dutch SBS6 television in recent years, and also by Eurosport across Europe.

[edit] Scottish Open
The Scottish Open was first held in 1983 when Australia's Russell Stewart took the title, but it only survived for one year [2]. The tournament returned in 1995 and in 2008 Garry Thompson became the 14th different winner in the 14 years its been staged.

[edit] Finnish Open
The Finnish Open will have a unique place in darts history as it was the last tournament in which all darts players were eligible to play in before a notorious split in the game which occurred during 1992/93. The 1993 Finnish Open (won by Alan Warriner) in May was the last "unified" tournament before the BDO and WDC (now PDC) separated.

The Unipart British Professional Championship was a tournament televised by the BBC between 1981 and 1988. After the 1988 championships, the BBC withdrew their coverage of the event and it left UK terrestrial television with only one televised tournament - the World Championships. The game was at an all-time low and players eventually went on to set up the World Darts Council in an attempt to bring back sponsors and television.

The MFI World Matchplay championship was short-lived but historic in darts as it featured the first ever televised nine dart finish on October 13, 1984 when John Lowe won £102,000 for the perfect game of darts against Keith Deller. Lowe went on to win the title that year. The tournament was broadcast on ITV and came from The Fulcrum Centre, Slough. ITV ceased coverage after the 1987 championships, and also pulled coverage of the World Masters in 1988 leaving the BBC as the only broadcaster of darts.
