Otep Shamaya is an American singer/songwriter. She made her debut in 2000 with the band OTEP, and released the full length albums Sevas Tra, House of Secrets, and the Ascension in June 2002, July 2004, and October 2007 respectively.
In December 2007 Shamaya confirmed that a polyp on her left vocal chord has appeared. She said "this is quite common for singers & speakers in all genres. I've had several follow ups with the doc and its been determined that the swelling in the chords and the size of the polyp had reduced and the prospects for recovery look good""[citation needed]

She is best known for her role as vocalist and namesake of OTEP. She is easily distinguished by her heavy screaming, gritty lyrical elements, spoken word, and is also one of the few well-known female vocalists in the metal scene that effectively uses guttural growls.[citation needed]
Shamaya has been featured on HBO's Def Poetry.[citation needed] The first printed collection of poetry and illustrations by Otep Shamaya was made available to the public in November 2006 exclusively on Lulu.com.[citation needed] In August 2007, the e-book Little Sins, her first electronic collection of printed poems and illustrations was placed in book form.

In 2006, Shamaya began a blog.[citation needed] During the_Ascension tour in late 2006, Shamaya recorded and posted several videos entitled "Tour Diaries" on YouTube and Myspace.[citation needed] In them she discussed recent show experiences and delivered messages to fans, including a personal apology for a sudden show cancellation in Utah due to a mechanical failure on the band's tour bus.[citation needed] Recently, she has also begun reading select poems from Caught Screaming on YouTube.[citation needed]
In April 2007, CNN.com announced that Shamaya had been nominated for their "People You Should Know" special feature.[citation needed] She also wrote an OP/ED on the genocide in Darfur.[citation needed] In a 2007 interview the singer stated that there would be a solo project titled I.MAGINARY F.RIENDS.[citation needed] So far the the tracks are "The Immortalz" and "Run For Cover".[citation needed] She lists the genre as Hip Hop / Rap / Experimental the album is yet to have a specified release date as of February 2008.

Little is known about Otep Shamaya's personal life and background. She grew up in a near ghetto area of Los Angeles.[citation needed] To interviewers, she has given her age as "five lifetimes old."[citation needed] It is said her birthdate is November 7, 1979. Despite speculation to the contrary, she insists that the name on her birth certificate is Otep.[citation needed] She is openly lesbian; one of the few, if not only, openly lesbian female musicians on the metal scene.[1]
