Osuitok Ipeelee
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Osuitok Ipeelee (1922-2005) was an Inuit sculptor who lived in Cape Dorset, Nunavut. His sculptures in green soapstone of caribou and birds are particularly esteemed for their balance and delicacy. He was an early collaborator with James Houston, and by Houston's account was instrumental in the conception of the Cape Dorset Print Cooperative. Despite this, he contributed a total of only four prints to the annual print collections, choosing instead to focus on sculpture. He was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1973.
