Ostrobothnia County

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ostrobothnia County, (Finnish: Pohjanmaan lääni, Swedish: Österbottens län) was a County of Sweden from 1634. In 1774 it was renamed Vaasa County (Finnish: Vaasan lääni, Swedish: Vasa län) and Oulu Province (Finnish: Oulun lääni) was split off. The Vaasa County (18551917 Nikolainkaupunki County) was ceded to Russia. It was continued as an administrative entity of the Grand Duchy of Finland until 1917, and following this as a county of Finland until the large scale reorganization in 1997 when it was merged into the province of Western Finland.

At present, the area covered by the county forms the regions of Ostrobothnia, Central Ostrobothnia and Southern Ostrobothnia.
