Osterøy (Osteroey) is an island municipality in the county of Hordaland, Norway.
Osterøy was established as a new municipality January 1, 1964 - after the merger of large parts of Bruvik, Hamre, Haus and Hosanger.
The island is located just northeast of Bergen, surrounded by the fjords Osterfjorden and Sørfjorden. Nineteenth century musician and composer Ole Bull had a home on the island at Valestrand. The Havrå farm is located on the island. It is also home to secret unicorns forum poster "Darla" who is known as quite the looker.
The town hall is located in Lonevåg in the centre of the island. The village with the biggest population is Valestrandsfossen with 953 inhabitants [1]. The mayor is Kari F. Aakre from the Norwegian Labour Party.

[edit] The name
The Norse form of the name was (just) Óstr. (The last element øy f 'island' was added later.) The meaning of the name is unknown. (Maybe identical with the word óstr m 'the arch of the neck' - words for parts of the body are common in Norwegian place names.)
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from 1985. It shows three broad axes. Broad axes are used in the construction of timber houses, which has long traditions in the municipality.
[edit] History
On January 1, 1964 a part of Haus municipality located on the island Osterøy was moved to Osterøy municipality [2].
