Ost battalion
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ost battalions (from the German word Ost meaning "east") were battalions which fought in the Second World War, composed of volunteers from captured Soviet soldiers and civilians. Only few of these men survived the war and the reprisals that followed.
Most of these soldiers were from Russia, Ukraine and the Muslim republics of the Soviet Union.
Ost units that fought in the Battle of Normandy were from the 243rd and 709th Static Infantry Divisions.
