River Thames

Osney Lock is a lock on the River Thames in Oxfordshire, England. It is close to Oxford where the village or island of Osney is next to the river.

The lock was built of stone by the Thames Navigation Commission in 1790. Beside the lock to the southern side is Osney pool which is an Environment Agency base for managing the river.

The weir is upstream alongside the navigation channel in two parts and feeds the Osney pool.

[edit] Access to the lock

The lock can be reached from Mill Street which turns off south from the A420 before Osney Bridge on the way out of Oxford.

[edit] Reach above the lock

The first part of the river here is believed to be an artificial cut created in mediaeval times by the monks of Osney Abbey. The river passes the built up parts of Oxford and is crossed by Osney Bridge near Oxford railway station on the eastern bank. After allotments and the backs of houses is the curious water crossroads - four rivers - with a link to the Oxford Canal in one direction and a stream in the other. Beyond this is Fiddler's Island which connects with the old navigation channel that runs to the east closer to Oxford. There used to be a weir here; now there is the Medley Footbridge. On the eastern bank is the open ground of Port Meadow as far as Wolvercote.

There are navigation transit markers alongside Port Meadow upstream of Meadley Boat station, to allow river users to check their speed. A powered boat should not pass between the markers in under one minute.

The Thames Path crosses to the Oxford side initially and then goes back across Fiddler's Island to the western bank to continue to Godstow Lock.
