Osmoderma eremita is a species of beetle in family Scarabaeidae. It is found in Austria, Belarus, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Moldova, Republic of, the Netherlands (extinct), Norway, Poland, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Ukraine. The larvae develop in hollow trees. Oak is the most important tree species, but the larvae may develop in any tree species with suitable hollows. Due to habitat loss and fragementation the species has decreased all over its distribution range. For that reason the species is protected in most European contries, and has been given the highest priority according to the EU's Habitat Directive.
